How to trust God in tough times?
What steps can we take to trust God in overwhelming situations?

The Scene of Overwhelm – Judges 6:33

“Now all the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people of the East gathered together, crossed over the Jordan, and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.”

Gideon wakes up to an army so vast that verse 5 compares them to “locusts.” Overwhelmed? Absolutely. Yet this snapshot launches a pattern for trusting God when life feels just as crowded with pressures today.

Step 1: Admit the Situation and Name the Fear

• Gideon does not pretend the enemy isn’t there; neither should we.

Psalm 56:3 – “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.”

Admitting fear is the doorway to choosing faith.

Step 2: Remember God’s Call and Promises

Judges 6:12 – “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.”

Isaiah 41:10; Romans 8:31.

Rehearse what God has already said instead of rehearsing the odds against you.

Step 3: Invite the Spirit’s Empowering

Judges 6:34 – “So the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon, and he blew the trumpet.”

Zechariah 4:6 – “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.”

Surrender turns anxiety into availability; the Spirit fills what we yield.

Step 4: Obey the Next Clear Instruction

Judges 6:25-27: Gideon tears down the Baal altar at night.

James 1:22 – “Be doers of the word.”

Trust grows one obedient step at a time, even when the step feels small or risky.

Step 5: Seek Confirming Light in His Word

• Gideon’s fleece episodes (Judges 6:36-40) show God’s patience.

2 Timothy 3:16; Romans 15:4 remind us Scripture is our sure confirmation today.

Search the Word until His promise outshouts the problem.

Step 6: Reduce Self-Reliance, Increase God-Reliance

Judges 7:2 – “You have too many men…”

2 Corinthians 12:9 – “My power is perfected in weakness.”

God may trim resources so the coming victory clearly bears His signature.

Step 7: Worship Before the Victory

Judges 7:15 – Gideon bows in worship after hearing an enemy’s dream.

Psalm 34:1 – “I will bless the LORD at all times.”

Praise shifts focus from the size of the battle to the sufficiency of God.

Step 8: Take the Step and Sound the Trumpet

Judges 7:16-20 – Gideon’s 300 blow trumpets and shatter jars; God routs the enemy.

Joshua 6:20 echoes the same principle.

Action sealed with faith releases God’s power into the situation.

Living It Today

1. List the specific pressures facing you.

2. Write out at least one promise of God beside each pressure.

3. Pray for fresh filling of the Holy Spirit.

4. Identify one concrete act of obedience you can do today.

5. Spend five minutes praising God aloud for who He is, not just what you need.

6. Move forward, even if the step feels as small as blowing a trumpet at night.

Trust isn’t a vague feeling; it’s a sequence of Spirit-led choices modeled by Gideon and fulfilled in Christ for us.
