How can we identify and nurture young leaders in our church community today? Setting the Scene “Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman and a Greek father.” (Acts 16:1) Why Timothy Caught Paul’s Eye • Genuine faith already evident (Acts 16:1; cf. 2 Timothy 1:5). • Good reputation among local believers (Acts 16:2). • Multi-cultural background opened doors for wider ministry (Acts 16:3). • Youthful, yet teachable (1 Timothy 4:12). Identifying “Timothys” Today • Look for visible fruit of salvation—consistent repentance, love, obedience (Matthew 7:16-20). • Listen to the congregation’s testimony about character (Proverbs 22:1). • Notice spiritual hunger—those who ask, serve, and learn without prodding (Psalm 119:20). • Watch for God-given gifting already emerging—leading peers, handling Scripture, showing mercy (Romans 12:6-8). • Confirm moral integrity in everyday settings (Luke 16:10). Family Foundations Matter • Timothy’s faith was first nurtured at home (2 Timothy 1:5). • Encourage believing parents and grandparents to: – Read Scripture aloud daily (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). – Model prayer and church involvement (Psalm 78:4-7). – Invite children into ministry moments early (Acts 21:5). Church Strategies for Nurture • Pair each emerging leader with an older, proven mentor—Paul had Timothy at his side almost constantly (Acts 16:3; 2 Timothy 3:10). • Provide doctrinal grounding—regular, systematic Bible study (Titus 2:1). • Assign real responsibility suited to their maturity: – Lead a small-group discussion. – Organize a service project. – Share a brief devotional in worship. • Offer feedback that is truthful yet affirming (Ephesians 4:15). • Protect from premature elevation; test first (1 Timothy 3:10). Encouraging Courage and Purity • Remind them not to let anyone look down on their youth (1 Timothy 4:12). • Call them to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace (2 Timothy 2:22). • Equip them with armor for spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:10-18). Releasing for Kingdom Impact • When proven, commission publicly with prayer and laying on of hands, as Paul and elders did (1 Timothy 4:14; Acts 13:3). • Continue relational support even after they are sent (2 Timothy 1:3-4). • Celebrate their victories and share in their sufferings (Philippians 2:19-22). Result to Expect Our obedience in spotting and cultivating young Timothys multiplies ministry, strengthens the church, and fulfills Christ’s design to “equip the saints for works of ministry, to build up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). |
