A Curtain that Welcomed Worshipers

“ ‘The curtain for the entrance to the courtyard was made of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely spun linen—the work of an embroiderer—twenty cubits long and five cubits high, corresponding to the hangings of the courtyard.’ ” (Exodus 38:18)

• This colorful screen marked the only doorway into the Tabernacle’s courtyard.

• Every sacrifice, every act of worship, began by passing through that single entrance.

• The curtain’s height matched the surrounding hangings, guarding the holy space while still inviting approach.

A Single Way In

• One entrance—no side doors, no alternate paths.

• Worshipers could not scale the linen fence; they had to come where God appointed.

• The vivid colors drew attention: blue (heaven), purple (royalty), scarlet (sacrifice), all woven into white linen (purity).

Patterns Fulfilled in Christ

Hebrews 9:8 reveals that the Spirit used Tabernacle design “to show that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed.” The curtain at the courtyard gate points ahead:

John 10:9 — “I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved.”

John 14:6 — “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Ephesians 2:18 — “For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”

Christ, Our Living Entrance

• Just as the single screen welcomed Israel, Jesus stands as the sole, sufficient entrance to God’s presence.

• The Tabernacle curtain was embroidered by human hands; the living Curtain was “prepared” by God (Hebrews 10:5).

Hebrews 10:19-20 — “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain of His body.”

• The colors find fulfillment in Him:

– Blue → He came from heaven (John 6:38).

– Purple → He is King of kings (Revelation 19:16).

– Scarlet → His blood secures atonement (1 Peter 1:18-19).

– White linen → His sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Invitations for Daily Living

• Approach God confidently, knowing the required entrance has been permanently opened (Hebrews 4:16).

• Abandon every self-made pathway; rely solely on Christ’s finished work (Acts 4:12).

• Celebrate the inclusiveness of the gate—anyone may enter, yet only through Jesus (Romans 10:11-13).

• Live as priests who have already passed the curtain, offering spiritual sacrifices of praise and service (1 Peter 2:5).

How does the gate's construction reflect God's holiness and accessibility in Exodus 38:18?
