Meaning of "bear fruit upward"?
What does "bear fruit upward" mean for a Christian's daily walk with God?

The Picture Isaiah Paints

“The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root below and bear fruit above.” (Isaiah 37:31)

Isaiah speaks to a people rescued from crisis. God promises two complementary actions: taking root below and bearing fruit above. One is unseen and hidden; the other is visible and productive. Both matter for today’s disciple of Jesus.

Roots Down, Fruit Up

• Roots Downward

– Private devotion: daily Scripture intake, meditation, and prayer (Psalm 1:2–3).

– Steadfast faith: trusting God’s promises regardless of circumstances (Jeremiah 17:7–8).

– Repentance: keeping the soil of the heart free from unconfessed sin (1 John 1:9).

• Fruit Upward

– Outward testimony: words and actions that point others to Christ (Matthew 5:16).

– Character transformation: “the fruit of the Spirit” displayed in real relationships (Galatians 5:22–23).

– Kingdom impact: good works God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).

Practical Ways to Bear Fruit Upward

1. Start every day drawing life from the Vine

“Remain in Me, and I will remain in you… the one who remains in Me and I in him will bear much fruit.” (John 15:4–5)

2. Speak life-giving words

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.” (Colossians 4:6)

3. Serve where God has placed you

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” (Colossians 3:23)

4. Walk in love

“Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us.” (Ephesians 5:2)

5. Practice generosity

“Do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (Hebrews 13:16)

Signs That Fruit Is Growing

• A growing desire to obey Scripture even in small matters (John 14:23).

• Relationships marked by forgiveness, patience, and genuine concern (1 Peter 4:8).

• A steady witness—coworkers, neighbors, or family beginning to ask about your hope (1 Peter 3:15).

• Joy that endures through trials (James 1:2–4).

• Increasing gratitude, turning everyday moments into praise (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Encouragement for Every Day

God never asks for fruit without providing the life-giving sap. Keep the roots of faith deep in His Word and presence; the upward fruit will follow in season. “So that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord… bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:10)
