Modern behaviors causing desolation?
What modern-day behaviors might lead to desolation like in Jeremiah 50:39?

Setting the Scene

Jeremiah 50:39: “So desert creatures and hyenas will dwell there, and ostriches will inhabit it. It will never again be lived in or settled for all generations.”

The prophet pictures Babylon so ruined that only wild animals remain. God’s judgment emptied a once-thriving empire. Scripture presents this desolation as a real, historical outcome—and also a sober pattern that can repeat whenever people exchange submission to the Lord for stubborn rebellion.

Behaviors That Still Invite Desolation Today

The same God who judged ancient Babylon judges nations and individuals now (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). When societies normalize the sins that marked Babylon, the results—spiritual barrenness, cultural collapse, even geographic ruin—can follow.

• Deliberate Idolatry

– Making career, pleasure, technology, or government the functional “god.”

Romans 1:25: “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”

• Proud Self-Sufficiency

– Believing progress, wealth, or military might makes a nation untouchable.

Isaiah 47:10: “Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you; you say to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’”

• Sexual Immorality Normalized

– Celebrating practices God calls sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

Galatians 6:7-8 reminds that sowing to the flesh reaps corruption.

• Systemic Injustice and Oppression

– Exploiting the poor, trafficking people, crushing the unborn or elderly.

Proverbs 22:22-23 and Isaiah 10:1-3 warn that the Lord rises to defend the vulnerable.

• Violence as Entertainment or Policy

– From media saturated with brutality to laws that excuse bloodshed.

Genesis 6:11 links a violent earth with impending judgment.

• Corruption and Dishonesty

– Government, business, and personal dealings riddled with deceit.

Proverbs 11:3: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the perversity of the treacherous destroys them.”

• Sorcery, Occult, and False Spirituality

– Embracing witchcraft, manifesting, and other demonic substitutes.

Revelation 18:2 parallels Babylon’s fall with a haunt for “unclean spirits.”

• Neglect of True Worship

– Abandoning corporate gathering, Scripture, and Sabbath rest (Hebrews 10:25).

Jeremiah 17:27 warns that rejecting Sabbath brings fire to the gates of a city.

Scriptural Echoes of the Same Warning

Revelation 18:2, 4—John sees future “Babylon” collapsing; God still says, “Come out of her, My people.”

Proverbs 14:34—“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.”

Psalm 2:12—“Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish in your way, for His wrath can flare up in a moment.”

Choosing a Different Outcome

God’s verdict on Babylon was final, but His heart for today’s world is redemption (2 Peter 3:9). When individuals, churches, and even nations repent—turning from the behaviors above and embracing the Lordship of Christ—He replaces desolation with blessing. The pattern is certain, the promise is sure, and the time to respond is now.
