NT passages echoing Isaiah 50:5?
Which New Testament passages echo the obedience theme found in Isaiah 50:5?

Isaiah 50:5 – the listening, obedient Servant

“The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have not been rebellious, nor have I turned back.”

From the start, the Servant’s ears are opened, His heart pliable, and His feet set to carry out whatever the Father says—no turning back.

Jesus mirrors that same obedience all through the Gospels

John 4:34 – “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.”

John 6:38 – “For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

John 8:28-29 – “I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me… I always do what pleases Him.”

John 10:18 – “I lay it down of My own accord… This charge I have received from My Father.”

Obedience tested and proven in Gethsemane

Matthew 26:39, 42 – “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will… Your will be done.”

Luke 22:42 echoes the same cry. The ear once opened in Isaiah now chooses submission when it costs everything.

Obedience carried through to the cross

Philippians 2:5-8 – He “humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.”

Hebrews 5:7-9 – “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered.”

Romans 5:19 – “Through the obedience of the One, the many will be made righteous.”

The apostles spotlight the theme

Hebrews 10:5-10 (quoting Psalm 40) – “Here I am… I have come to do Your will, O God.”

1 Peter 2:21-23 – Christ “left you an example,” refusing retaliation and entrusting Himself to the Father.

Calling believers to the same path

1 John 2:3-6 – To know Him is to “walk as He walked.”

James 1:22 – “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

Isaiah’s Servant with opened ears finds His fullest expression in Jesus, and the New Testament invites every disciple into that same wholehearted, unquestioning obedience.

How can we apply the example of listening in Isaiah 50:5 today?
