Other Scriptures on destroying idols?
What other Scriptures emphasize the importance of destroying false idols and altars?

Setting the Scene: 2 Chronicles 31:1

“When all this had ended, the Israelites who were present went out to the cities of Judah and smashed the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and demolished the high places and altars from all Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their own cities, each to his own property.”

Hezekiah’s reforms did not stop at temple worship; they spilled into every town. The nation took decisive action, sweeping the land clean of every competing object of devotion. Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to this same zeal.

Commands in the Law

God laid the foundation for idol‐destruction long before Judah’s revival. Notice how explicit and repetitive His instructions are:

Exodus 23:24 — “You shall not bow down to their gods or serve them or follow their practices. Instead, you are to demolish them and smash their sacred stones to pieces.”

Exodus 34:13-14 — “Instead, you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, and chop down their Asherah poles. For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

Leviticus 26:1 — “You must not make idols or set up carved images or sacred pillars or place sculptured stones in your land to bow down to them; for I am the LORD your God.”

Deuteronomy 7:5 — “Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their idols in the fire.”

Deuteronomy 12:3 — “Tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, burn their Asherah poles and idols in the fire, and wipe out their names from every place.”

Historic Obedience in Israel and Judah

The biblical record highlights leaders who took God’s words literally and acted:

Judges 6:25-26 — The LORD tells Gideon to “tear down the altar of Baal that belongs to your father and cut down the Asherah pole beside it,” replacing it with an altar to the LORD.

1 Samuel 7:3-4 — Samuel calls Israel to “rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths,” and they comply.

1 Kings 15:13 — King Asa removes the obscene Asherah image his grandmother had made and burns it in the Kidron Valley.

2 Kings 18:4 — “Hezekiah removed the high places, smashed the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.”

2 Kings 23:14-15 — Josiah “smashed the sacred pillars to pieces, cut down the Asherah poles, and covered the sites with human bones.”

2 Chronicles 14:3-5 — Asa “tore down the foreign altars and high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and chopped down the Asherah poles.”

2 Chronicles 34:3-7 — Young Josiah “purged Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, Asherah poles, and carved images,” grinding them to dust.

Prophetic Voices Calling for Radical Cleansing

God’s prophets kept pressing the point whenever the nation drifted:

Isaiah 30:22 — “You will desecrate your silver-covered idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and call them ‘Filth!’”

Jeremiah 10:11 — “The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under these heavens.”

Ezekiel 6:4-6 — “Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars smashed… your idols will be smashed and obliterated.”

Hosea 10:2 — “Their hearts are devious; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will demolish their altars and destroy their sacred pillars.”

New Testament Echoes

While the physical idols of Canaan are long gone, the New Testament still calls believers to decisive action against anything that rivals Christ:

Acts 19:19 — “Many of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in front of everyone.”

1 Corinthians 10:14 — “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

2 Corinthians 6:16 — “What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God.”

1 John 5:21 — “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

Why God Demands Idol-Destruction

• Exclusive covenant love: “You must not worship any other god, for the LORD… is a jealous God” (Exodus 34:14).

• Spiritual contagion: Idols lure hearts away from obedience (Deuteronomy 12:30-31).

• Public testimony: Smashing altars demonstrates visibly that the LORD alone reigns (1 Kings 18:39-40).

• Generational protection: Removing objects of false worship breaks patterns that ensnare future children (2 Kings 23:10).

Living the Principle Today

Physical Asherah poles rarely decorate modern yards, yet anything that steals devotion—possessions, achievements, relationships, entertainment, ideologies—can become an altar. Scripture’s consistent call is to identify those rivals and remove them without compromise, just as Hezekiah’s generation did. Wholehearted worship leaves no room for competing gods.

How can we apply the Israelites' zeal for God in our communities today?
