How can we prepare for opposition when sharing the Gospel today? A Snapshot From Acts 14:5 “But when the Gentiles and Jews, together with their rulers, set out to mistreat and stone them,” (Acts 14:5) • Paul and Barnabas are faithfully preaching, yet hostility gathers. • Their experience sets the pattern: announcing the Gospel stirs both faith and resistance. Opposition Is Inevitable • Jesus forewarned: “If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.” (John 15:18-20) • “Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12) • Expecting push-back keeps us from surprise or discouragement (1 Peter 4:12-13). Fortify Your Inner Life • Daily Scripture intake and prayer ground the heart before entering hostile spaces (Psalm 1:2-3). • “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God.” (Ephesians 6:10-11) • The Spirit supplies boldness (Acts 4:31) and love that casts out fear (1 John 4:18). Lock Arms With Fellow Believers • Paul and Barnabas ministered in pairs; isolation invites discouragement (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). • Share testimonies, intercede for one another, debrief after difficult conversations (Acts 14:27). • The church family supplies practical care when opposition affects jobs, reputation, or safety (Acts 2:44-45). Walk in Wisdom and Discernment • When violence threatened, the apostles “found out about it and fled” (Acts 14:6). Flight was not cowardice but stewardship. • Jesus counseled: “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16) • Discern when to stay and speak, when to move on (Acts 13:50-51). Keep the Message Central • Opposition often targets personalities; keep conversation tethered to Christ crucified and risen (1 Corinthians 2:2). • Avoid needless controversies that distract from the Gospel (2 Timothy 2:23). • Joyfully testify to what Christ has done rather than defending self-image (Revelation 12:11). Respond With Grace and Courage • “Do not repay anyone evil for evil… overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:17-21) • Blessing those who insult showcases the character of Christ (1 Peter 3:15-16). • Maintain gentle firmness; courage anchored in truth often opens unexpected doors (Philippians 1:12-14). Press On With Eternal Hope • Suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-5). • Future glory far outweighs present troubles (2 Corinthians 4:17). • Opposition cannot silence the Gospel; it often amplifies it, just as Acts records the word spreading despite every attempt to stop it (Acts 12:24). |
