Using Jesus' power over evil daily?
How can we apply Jesus' authority over evil spirits in our daily lives?

Mark 9:18—A Snapshot of the Battle

“Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”

• A real boy, a real demon, and disciples who discover they cannot win the fight in their own strength.

• Jesus’ later explanation (v. 29) makes clear that victory comes only through dependence on Him (“prayer and fasting”).

Jesus’ Authority Is Absolute, Delegated, and Active

• “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” (Matthew 28:18)

• “See, I have given you authority… over all the power of the enemy.” (Luke 10:19)

• That authority is not theoretical—Acts 16:18 shows Paul using it: “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.”

Why the Disciples Failed—and What We Learn

• Lack of faith (Mark 9:19,23)

• Prayerlessness (Mark 9:29)

• The lesson: authority flows from intimate, ongoing fellowship with Jesus, not from technique.

Daily Ways to Apply Jesus’ Authority over Evil

• Submit fully to God—then resist (James 4:7).

• Clothe yourself in the full armor of God each morning (Ephesians 6:11-18).

• Proclaim the truth aloud; demons hate Scripture stated in faith (Matthew 4:4-10).

• Use the name of Jesus Christ when confronting spiritual oppression (Acts 3:6).

• Fast periodically to heighten spiritual alertness and break stubborn strongholds (Mark 9:29).

• Stay filled with the Holy Spirit—worship, pray in the Spirit, keep short accounts with sin (Ephesians 5:18; 1 John 1:9).

• Guard your home: remove occult objects, dedicate the space to Christ, play Scripture or worship (Deuteronomy 7:26).

• Walk in forgiven, loving relationships; bitterness gives the devil a foothold (Ephesians 4:26-27,32).

Scriptures to Stand On When Confronting Darkness

1 John 4:4—“Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

Mark 16:17—“In My name they will drive out demons.”

Colossians 2:15—“He disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them.”

Psalm 91:13—“You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent.”

Practical Situations and How to Respond

• Intrusive, blasphemous thoughts → Speak Philippians 4:8 and command the spirit of torment to leave in Jesus’ name.

• Nightmares or heaviness in a child’s room → Read Psalm 4:8 aloud, anoint the doorway with oil, forbid demonic presence.

• Sudden atmosphere of anger in the home → Pause, submit to God, verbally bind the spirit of strife, then practice peacemaking.

• Outreach encounter with someone oppressed → Share the gospel, discern willingness, command the spirit to depart while exalting Jesus.

Living Continually under Christ’s Authority

• Keep short accounts—confess sin quickly.

• Fill mind and mouth with the Word daily.

• Gather with believers for mutual accountability; corporate faith drives darkness back (Matthew 18:20).

• Expect victory. Jesus never loses to demons, and His Spirit lives in you.
