What is making God my refuge?
What does it mean to "make the Lord GOD my refuge"?

The Heart of Psalm 73:28

“But as for me, it is good to draw near to God. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may proclaim all Your works.” (Psalm 73:28)

What “Refuge” Signifies

- A shelter from danger (Psalm 46:1)

- A safe dwelling that cannot be breached (Psalm 91:1-3)

- A place of confident trust, not temporary escape (Proverbs 18:10)

To “make” the Lord GOD your refuge is a deliberate, personal decision to seek, rely on, and remain in His protection rather than in one’s own resources.

How To Make the Lord GOD Your Refuge

1. Draw near—relationship precedes refuge

• “It is good to draw near to God.” (Psalm 73:28)

• Approach Him by faith in Christ’s finished work (Hebrews 10:19-22).

2. Shift your trust

• Move confidence from self, people, or possessions to God alone (Jeremiah 17:5-8).

• Confess dependence: “My salvation and my honor rest on God” (Psalm 62:7).

3. Dwell, don’t just visit

• Choose continual communion—daily prayer, Scripture, obedience (John 15:4-7).

• “Because you have made the LORD your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place” (Psalm 91:9).

4. Surrender control

• A refuge takes over the fight; we relinquish rights to retaliation or worry (Romans 12:19; Philippians 4:6-7).

5. Stand under His promises

• Claim His covenant words literally: protection (Psalm 121), presence (Isaiah 41:10), peace (John 14:27).

Results of Making Him Your Refuge

- Protection: “He will cover you with His feathers” (Psalm 91:4).

- Perspective: envy and bitterness melt away as in all of Psalm 73.

- Proclamation: “that I may proclaim all Your works” (Psalm 73:28).

- Joy and strength: “The joy of the LORD is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

Living It Out Today

• Start each morning by acknowledging, “Lord, You are my refuge today.”

• When anxiety hits, run to a promise verse and speak it aloud (e.g., Nahum 1:7).

• Replace grumbling with testimony—tell someone how God shielded you this week.

• End the day recounting ways His refuge proved real, cultivating gratitude and faith for tomorrow.
