When to seek God's wisdom?
How can we discern when to seek God's wisdom in challenging situations?

The Picture of the Dull Axe

“If the axe is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but wisdom will bring success.” (Ecclesiastes 10:10)

Recognizing the Dull Moments

• A task that once felt manageable now drains you.

• Repeated effort yields little fruit.

• Frustration rises faster than progress.

• Relationships splinter under the strain of your striving.

These signal that the “edge” has grown blunt and wisdom—God’s wisdom—is required.

Indicators We Need God’s Wisdom

• Confusion: “I don’t know what to do next.” (cf. James 1:5)

• Conflict: tension with others that human reasoning can’t untangle. (cf. Proverbs 15:22)

• Temptation: a lure toward choices opposing God’s Word. (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:13)

• Weariness: physical or emotional depletion pointing to self-reliance. (cf. Isaiah 40:30-31)

• Stagnation: no spiritual growth despite effort. (cf. John 15:5)

How to Seek and Receive Wisdom

1. Pause and Acknowledge

• Admit the blade is dull. Pride resists sharpening; humility invites it. (cf. Proverbs 3:34)

2. Ask Specifically

• “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously…” (James 1:5)

3. Search the Scriptures

• “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

• Let the objective truth of God’s Word hone perception.

4. Listen for the Spirit’s Leading

• The Spirit illuminates and applies Scripture to current choices. (cf. John 16:13)

5. Seek Godly Counsel

• “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)

6. Obey Promptly

• Wisdom is proven in practice. (cf. Matthew 7:24)

7. Repeat Regularly

• Continual sharpening prevents future dullness. (cf. 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Encouragement for Continual Sharpening

• Trust God’s insight above your own. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

• Remember His wisdom surpasses yours. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts…” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

• Celebrate every instance of strength conserved and success gained when the sharpened edge of divine wisdom meets the wood of daily challenges.
