Invitation to Praise

Psalm 135:1 says, “Hallelujah! Praise the name of the LORD. Give praise, O servants of the LORD.”

Right from the opening word—Hallelujah—the psalmist calls us to erupt in joyful, wholehearted worship. Below are some of the attributes behind that command, each one a fresh reason to lift up praise today.

Attribute 1: His Revealed Name—YHWH

• God’s personal name declares that He simply is.

Exodus 3:14–15: “I AM WHO I AM… This is My name forever.”

• His self-existent, self-sufficient nature means He depends on no one and nothing; we can depend on Him for everything.

Attribute 2: Unchanging Faithfulness

Malachi 3:6: “For I, the LORD, do not change.”

Hebrews 13:8 shows the same stability in Christ: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

• Because His character never shifts, every promise He has made is still good this morning.

Attribute 3: Matchless Holiness

Isaiah 6:3: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”

• His purity is absolute, untouched by sin, and yet He draws close to cleanse His people (1 John 1:7).

Attribute 4: Sovereign Power

Psalm 135 later explains why we praise: “For the LORD does whatever pleases Him in the heavens and on the earth” (v. 6).

Jeremiah 32:17 reminds us, “Nothing is too difficult for You!”

• Creation, providence, and redemption all flow from a will that never faces frustration.

Attribute 5: Covenant Love and Mercy

Psalm 136 repeats, “His loving devotion endures forever.”

Lamentations 3:22–23: “Because of the LORD’s loving devotion we are not consumed… great is Your faithfulness!”

• His mercy is not fleeting sentiment; it is steadfast commitment sealed in blood (Luke 22:20).

Attribute 6: Just and Righteous Judge

Psalm 97:2: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.”

Revelation 19:2 celebrates, “His judgments are true and just.”

• His justice guarantees that evil will not have the last word and that righteousness will ultimately prevail.

Attribute 7: Nearness to His People

Psalm 145:18: “The LORD is near to all who call on Him.”

Matthew 28:20: “I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

• The transcendent God stoops to be present—guiding, comforting, empowering.

Putting It All Together

When Psalm 135:1 urges, “Praise the name of the LORD,” it isn’t a vague encouragement; it’s an invitation to rehearse specific, concrete truths about who God is:

• Eternal, self-existent Name

• Immutable faithfulness

• Radiant holiness

• Unrivaled sovereign power

• Covenant-keeping love

• Perfect justice

• Intimate presence

Let each attribute kindle fresh praise today, echoing the psalmist’s cry: “Hallelujah!”
