Why did Jesus want Passover with them?
Why did Jesus eagerly desire to eat the Passover with His disciples?

Eager Anticipation: Luke 22:15

“And He said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering.’” (Luke 22:15)

Why the Intense Desire?

• Fulfillment of Passover symbolism

Exodus 12:5–7, 13 presents a spotless lamb whose blood delivers from judgment.

– “For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)

– Sharing the meal on the very night He would be arrested underscores that He Himself is the Lamb whose death secures deliverance.

• Institution of the New Covenant

– During this meal Jesus said, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20)

Jeremiah 31:31–34 promised a covenant bringing forgiveness and an internal law; Jesus launches it here.

Hebrews 9:15 links His death to the inauguration of that covenant: freedom from sins committed under the first covenant.

• Deep Fellowship Before Suffering

John 13:1 describes His love “to the very end.” Sharing Passover provided intimate time with the men He had trained for three years.

– Table fellowship signified acceptance and unity; He strengthens them for what lies ahead (John 14–16).

• Teaching Through Symbolic Actions

– Breaking bread and sharing the cup become perpetual reminders of His sacrifice (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

– Washing their feet (John 13:4-17) models servant-leadership, a lesson sealed within the same evening.

• Obedience to Divine Timetable

– Numerous attempts had been made to seize Him earlier (John 7:30; 8:20), yet “His hour had not yet come.”

– Passover night is the appointed “hour” (John 12:23); He desires the meal because it marks the precise moment foreordained by the Father.

• Foretaste of the Coming Kingdom

– “I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” (Luke 22:18)

– The Last Supper points ahead to the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:6-9). His eagerness includes joyful anticipation of that ultimate banquet with all redeemed believers.
