Why is Jesus worthy in Revelation 5:7?
Why is Jesus uniquely worthy to take the scroll in Revelation 5:7?

The Heavenly Throne Room Setting

John is carried “in the Spirit” (Revelation 4:2) into the very presence of God. Flashes of lightning, peals of thunder, and rainbow–like emerald light issue from the throne. Around it, twenty-four elders fall facedown in worship while four living creatures cry, “Holy, holy, holy” (Revelation 4:8). Chapter 5 opens with everyone’s attention fixed on a mysterious scroll in the Father’s right hand.

The Scroll and Its Significance

• “A scroll written inside and out, sealed with seven seals” (Revelation 5:1) represents the title-deed to the earth—God’s redemptive plan and His judgments that will usher in Christ’s kingdom (compare Jeremiah 32:6-15).

• Sealed seven times, it can be opened only by One who meets heaven’s strict standard of moral, legal, and royal authority.

The Great Search for Worthiness

• “No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or even to look inside it” (Revelation 5:3).

• The silence of angels, patriarchs, prophets, and martyrs underlines humanity’s total inability to reclaim creation from sin’s curse.

• John weeps loudly because God’s purposes appear stalled—until divine intervention arrives.

The Lion-Lamb Appears

• An elder comforts John: “Do not weep! Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed to open the scroll and its seven seals” (Revelation 5:5).

• John looks—and sees “a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, standing in the center of the throne” (Revelation 5:6).

• “He came and took the scroll from the right hand of the One seated on the throne” (Revelation 5:7). The transfer proves His unique competence and right.

Seven Reasons Jesus Alone Is Worthy

1. Lion of Judah—Rightful King

Genesis 49:9-10 promised a ruler from Judah’s line; Jesus fulfills it (Matthew 1:3, 16).

2. Root of David—Covenant Heir

Isaiah 11:1, 10; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 show Messiah as David’s greater Son. Jesus’ resurrection secures that throne forever (Acts 2:30-33).

3. Victor Over Sin, Satan, and Death

• “Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them” (Colossians 2:15).

4. Slain Redeemer

• “With Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue” (Revelation 5:9; 1 Peter 1:18-19).

5. Perfectly Righteous

• He “committed no sin” (1 Peter 2:22). Only sinless blood satisfies divine justice (Hebrews 9:14).

6. Living, Sovereign Lord

• “I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I hold the keys of Death and of Hades” (Revelation 1:18).

7. Fully God, Eternally Worshiped

• All creation praises “Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb” alike (Revelation 5:13), affirming His deity and co-equality with the Father.

Heaven’s Overflowing Praise

• Harps resound, golden bowls of incense rise, and a new song bursts forth (Revelation 5:8-10).

• Myriads of angels proclaim, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain” (Revelation 5:12).

• Every creature in the universe echoes the anthem, confirming that Jesus’ worthiness is unrivaled and universally recognized.

Living in the Reality of the Worthy Lamb

• Confidence—Because Jesus holds the scroll, world events unfold under His sovereign plan (Matthew 28:18).

• Worship—Heaven’s pattern invites wholehearted adoration now (Hebrews 13:15).

• Hope—Redemption will be completed; the sealed judgments will cleanse creation and usher in His righteous reign (Romans 8:19-23; Revelation 20:4-6).

• Mission—The Lamb purchased people “from every tribe and tongue.” We join heaven’s agenda by proclaiming His gospel to all nations (Matthew 24:14; 2 Corinthians 5:20).
