Why recognize Jesus as Lord & heir?
Why is it important to recognize Jesus as both Lord and David's son?

Setting the Scene

“While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them: ‘What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?’ They answered, ‘The son of David.’ Jesus said to them, ‘How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls Him Lord: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.’” If then David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?’ ” (Matthew 22:41-45)

Son of David: The Earthly Lineage

• Fulfills God’s covenant promise to David that his throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16).

• Confirms Jesus’ genuine humanity—He shares our flesh and blood (Hebrews 2:14).

• Validates messianic prophecies such as Isaiah 11:1 and Jeremiah 23:5.

• Grounds the gospel in real history; Jesus entered a specific family line (Matthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38).

• Affirms Jesus’ legal right to Israel’s throne, uniting the hopes of Israel with the hope of the nations (Romans 15:12).

Lord of David: The Divine Identity

Psalm 110:1 reveals the Messiah as David’s superior: “The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand…’ ”.

• Declares Jesus’ pre-existence and deity (John 1:1-3; John 8:58).

• Establishes His absolute authority over heaven and earth (Matthew 28:18).

• Shows He is the One who reigns at the Father’s right hand, interceding for us (Hebrews 1:3; 7:25).

• Confirms that worshiping Jesus is not idolatry but obedience, since only God is to be worshiped (Revelation 5:12-14).

Why Holding Both Truths Matters

• Completeness of Salvation: Only the God-Man can bridge the gap between holy God and sinful humanity (1 Timothy 2:5).

• Reliability of Scripture: Prophecies of both His humanity and deity unite, proving the Bible’s consistency.

• Rightful Kingship: As David’s heir He rules legally; as Lord He rules eternally.

• Perfect High Priest: His humanity enables sympathy; His deity secures efficacy (Hebrews 4:14-16).

• Fullness of Worship: Recognizing both aspects fuels wholehearted praise—mind, heart, and will.

Practical Outcomes for Our Faith

• Confidence in the gospel’s power—Jesus is mighty to save because He is God and able to represent us because He is man.

• Steadfast hope—His throne is unshakable, guaranteeing the future kingdom.

• Deeper love for Scripture—prophecy and fulfillment weave together in Christ.

• Humble obedience—acknowledging Him as Lord moves us to submit every area of life.

• Joyful expectancy—David’s Son will return as David’s Lord to reign visibly (Revelation 22:16).
