The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart,

Jesus teaches that conduct proceeds from character. The good man is not merely outwardly respectable; his heart has been shaped by faith, repentance, and submission to God. The treasure within includes God’s truth, wisdom, love, mercy, and a settled desire to obey Him. Proverbs 4:23 calls for careful guarding of the heart because the course of life flows from it. In the surrounding teaching, Jesus compares people to trees known by their fruit, showing that righteous actions arise from an inwardly transformed life.

Evil deeds, malicious words, deceit, and selfishness reveal a heart storing corrupt desires and rebellious attitudes. Humanity’s fallen condition reaches inwardly; apart from God’s saving grace, the heart does not naturally produce righteousness. Jeremiah described the heart as deceitful above all things, and Jesus elsewhere taught that defilement comes from within. The warning is not solved by controlling appearances alone. God must grant a new heart, cleansing and renewing those who turn to Christ.

Words uncover what has been filling the inner life. Speech marked by truth, grace, gratitude, and godly wisdom ordinarily comes from a heart dwelling on God’s Word, while habitual bitterness, slander, profanity, lying, and cruelty disclose spiritual disorder. James likewise warns that the tongue can bless God or injure people made in His likeness. Believers are therefore called to examine their speech and, more deeply, to seek hearts filled with the truth and love of Christ.
