Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!

Zion, the place of God’s dwelling among His people, represents the source of the Lord’s saving power. David longs for God to intervene openly against Israel’s enemies and the corruption described throughout the psalm. The cry also reaches beyond immediate national distress to the promised Redeemer. God laid in Zion the sure cornerstone, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, through whom salvation comes to Israel and to all who believe.

When the LORD restores His captive people,

The Lord alone can reverse the misery, oppression, and exile-like condition of His people. Israel’s later return from Babylon displayed God’s faithfulness to restore what judgment had taken away. Yet every earthly restoration pointed to the greater deliverance Christ accomplishes, freeing His people from sin and gathering them under His righteous reign.
