Call to Intercession

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of intercession in the Bible refers to the act of intervening or mediating on behalf of others through prayer. It is a significant aspect of the Christian faith, where believers are encouraged to pray not only for their own needs but also for the needs of others, including individuals, communities, and nations. The call to intercession is rooted in the understanding of God's desire for His people to be actively involved in His redemptive work on earth.

Biblical Foundation

Intercession is exemplified throughout Scripture, with numerous instances where individuals stand in the gap for others. One of the earliest examples is found in Genesis 18:22-33, where Abraham intercedes for Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham's dialogue with God demonstrates the power and importance of intercessory prayer, as he pleads for the cities' preservation if righteous individuals can be found within them.

Moses is another prominent intercessor. In Exodus 32:11-14, after the Israelites sinned by worshiping the golden calf, Moses intercedes on their behalf, appealing to God's promises and His reputation among the nations. His intercession results in God relenting from the disaster He had planned.

The prophets also played a crucial role in intercession. In Ezekiel 22:30, God laments the absence of an intercessor: "I searched for a man among them to repair the wall and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, so that I should not destroy it; but I found no one." This highlights the importance God places on intercessors who can avert judgment through prayer.

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is the ultimate intercessor. Hebrews 7:25 states, "Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them." Jesus' role as an intercessor is central to His priestly ministry, continually advocating for believers before the Father.

The Apostle Paul frequently emphasizes the importance of intercessory prayer. In 1 Timothy 2:1, he urges, "First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone." Paul himself is an example of an intercessor, as seen in his letters where he often mentions praying for the churches and individuals he ministers to (e.g., Ephesians 1:16-18, Philippians 1:3-5).

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in intercession. Romans 8:26-27 explains, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." The Spirit aids believers in their intercessory efforts, aligning their prayers with God's will.

Practical Application

Believers are called to be intercessors, following the examples set forth in Scripture. This involves a commitment to prayer, seeking God's intervention in the lives of others, and standing in the gap for those who may not be able to pray for themselves. Intercession is an act of love and service, reflecting the heart of Christ and His desire for all to come to repentance and knowledge of the truth.

Intercessory prayer can be practiced individually or corporately, and it encompasses a wide range of needs, including spiritual, physical, and emotional concerns. It is a powerful tool for spiritual warfare, community transformation, and the advancement of God's kingdom on earth.
