The term "holiness" is derived from the Hebrew word "qodesh" and the Greek word "hagios," both of which convey the idea of being set apart, sacred, or consecrated. Holiness is fundamentally about separation from sin and dedication to God.

In the Old Testament, God is repeatedly described as holy. In Isaiah 6:3, the seraphim proclaim, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth." This thrice-repeated declaration emphasizes the absolute purity and otherness of God. The holiness of God is also evident in His moral perfection and His separation from all that is sinful or impure.

God's holiness demands a response from His people. Leviticus 19:2 commands, "Speak to the entire congregation of the Israelites and tell them: ‘Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.'" This call to holiness is reiterated in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 1:15-16 states, "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

Holiness in the life of a believer involves both positional and practical aspects. Positionally, believers are made holy through their union with Christ. Hebrews 10:10 affirms, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Practically, holiness is the process of sanctification, where believers grow in godliness and moral purity. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, as seen in Galatians 5:16, "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

The pursuit of holiness is a lifelong journey, requiring discipline, obedience, and a deepening relationship with God. It involves a conscious effort to avoid sin and to cultivate virtues such as love, humility, and righteousness. Hebrews 12:14 exhorts, "Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord."

Wisdom

Wisdom in the Bible is more than mere knowledge or intelligence; it is the application of divine truth to life. The Hebrew word for wisdom, "chokmah," and the Greek word "sophia" both encompass the idea of skillful living and moral insight. Wisdom is portrayed as a valuable treasure, essential for a life that honors God.

The source of true wisdom is God Himself. Proverbs 2:6 declares, "For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." This divine wisdom is accessible to those who seek it with a humble and reverent heart. James 1:5 encourages believers, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

The book of Proverbs is a key biblical text on wisdom, offering practical guidance for righteous living. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This verse highlights the foundational role of reverence for God in acquiring wisdom.

Wisdom is personified in Proverbs 8, where it is depicted as calling out to humanity, offering guidance and understanding. This personification points to the ultimate embodiment of wisdom in Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:3 affirms that in Christ "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

The New Testament further emphasizes the importance of wisdom in the life of a believer. Ephesians 5:15-17 advises, "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is."

Wisdom is also linked to righteous conduct and the fruit of the Spirit. James 3:17 describes the characteristics of heavenly wisdom: "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere."
