Humility

Humility is a foundational virtue in Christian theology, often characterized by a modest view of one's own importance and a recognition of one's dependence on God. The Bible frequently exhorts believers to cultivate humility as a reflection of Christ's own character. In Philippians 2:3, the Apostle Paul instructs, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves" . This passage highlights the selfless nature of humility, urging believers to prioritize the needs and well-being of others above their own.

The ultimate example of humility is found in Jesus Christ, who, though being in the form of God, "did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:6-7). Christ's incarnation and sacrificial death on the cross serve as the supreme model of humility, demonstrating the depth of God's love and the call for believers to emulate His example.

Humility is also linked to wisdom and divine favor. Proverbs 11:2 states, "When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom" . This suggests that humility opens the heart to receive God's guidance and understanding. Furthermore, James 4:6 reminds believers, "But He gives us more grace. Submission

Submission in the biblical context refers to the act of yielding to the authority or will of another, often seen as an expression of humility and obedience to God. Ephesians 5:21 instructs believers to "submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" , indicating that mutual submission is a hallmark of Christian community and relationships. This submission is not about subjugation but rather a voluntary act of love and respect, reflecting the unity and harmony that should characterize the body of Christ.

In the context of marriage, submission is addressed in Ephesians 5:22-24, where wives are called to submit to their husbands as to the Lord. This passage has been the subject of much discussion, but it is important to understand it within the broader framework of mutual love and respect. Husbands are likewise commanded to love their wives sacrificially, as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25), creating a dynamic of mutual care and submission.

Submission to God is a central theme throughout Scripture. James 4:7 exhorts believers, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" . This submission involves surrendering one's own will and desires to align with God's purposes, acknowledging His sovereignty and lordship over all aspects of life.

The Apostle Peter also emphasizes submission to human authorities as a testimony of faith, writing, "Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to the king as the supreme authority, or to governors" (1 Peter 2:13-14). This submission is not blind obedience but is done "for the Lord's sake," recognizing that all authority ultimately derives from God.
