The term "Issue of Blood" refers to a medical condition described in the Bible, specifically in the New Testament, where a woman suffered from a continuous flow of blood. This condition is often understood to be a form of chronic hemorrhage or menstrual disorder, which rendered the woman ceremonially unclean according to Jewish law.

Biblical Account:

The primary account of the woman with the issue of blood is found in the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:25-34, and Luke 8:43-48. The Berean Standard Bible provides a clear depiction of this event:

· Mark 5:25-29 : "And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak, because she thought, 'If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.' Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering."

This passage highlights the desperation and faith of the woman, who, after exhausting all her resources on medical treatments, sought healing through Jesus Christ. Her condition, lasting twelve years, not only caused physical suffering but also social and religious isolation due to the Levitical laws concerning purity.

Cultural and Religious Context:

According to Levitical law, a woman with an issue of blood was considered ceremonially unclean (Leviticus 15:25-27). This meant she was excluded from participating in religious activities and was often isolated from the community to prevent the spread of ritual impurity. Anything or anyone she touched would also become unclean, which added to her social stigma and personal suffering.

Significance of the Healing:

The healing of the woman with the issue of blood is significant for several reasons:

1. Faith and Healing: The woman's faith in Jesus' power to heal is a central theme. Her belief that merely touching His garment would result in healing demonstrates a profound trust in His divine authority.

2. Jesus' Compassion: Jesus' response to the woman is one of compassion and affirmation. In Mark 5:34 , Jesus says, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." By addressing her as "Daughter," Jesus not only acknowledges her faith but also restores her dignity and place within the community.

3. Breaking Social Barriers: The account illustrates Jesus' willingness to transcend social and religious barriers. By healing the woman, He challenges the prevailing norms of ritual purity and demonstrates that His mission includes restoring those marginalized by society.

4. Symbol of Spiritual Cleansing: The physical healing of the woman also serves as a metaphor for spiritual cleansing and redemption. It underscores the belief that faith in Christ brings about holistic healing—both physical and spiritual.

Theological Implications:

The account of the woman with the issue of blood is often interpreted as a testament to the power of faith and the inclusive nature of Jesus' ministry. It emphasizes that faith in Christ can overcome any barrier, whether physical, social, or spiritual. The narrative also reflects the transformative power of Jesus' presence, which brings healing and restoration to those who seek Him earnestly.

In summary, the account of the woman with the issue of blood is a profound illustration of faith, healing, and the breaking of societal norms through the compassionate ministry of Jesus Christ.

ISSUE (OF BLOOD)

(zobh, zubh; rhusis, haimorrhoos): When used as a description of a bodily affection the word signifies:

(1) A discharge, the consequence of uncleanness and sin (Leviticus 15:2 Numbers 5:2). As such it was one of the judgments which were to afflict the family of Joab (2 Samuel 3:29);

(2) a hemorrhage, either natural (Leviticus 12:7, where the word used is maqor, literally, a "fountain"), or the consequence of disease (Matthew 9:20 Mark 5:25 Luke 8:43).
