The concept of "Mother Nature" is not explicitly found in the Bible, as the term itself originates from pagan traditions and mythology, where nature is personified as a maternal figure. However, the Bible does address the natural world extensively, attributing its creation and sustenance to the sovereign work of God.

Creation and Sovereignty of God

The Bible begins with the account of creation, where God is depicted as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 states, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This foundational verse establishes God as the ultimate source and authority over all creation, contrasting with the personification of nature as a separate entity.

Throughout Scripture, God's sovereignty over nature is emphasized. Psalm 24:1 declares, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein." This verse underscores the belief that the earth and everything in it belong to God, not to an independent force like Mother Nature.

Nature's Testimony to God's Glory

The natural world is portrayed in the Bible as a testament to God's power and majesty. Romans 1:20 states, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse." Here, nature serves as evidence of God's existence and attributes, inviting humanity to recognize His handiwork.

Psalm 19:1-2 further illustrates this point: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge." The psalmist poetically describes how the natural world continuously reveals the glory and knowledge of God, pointing to Him as the Creator.

God's Provision and Care

The Bible also speaks of God's provision and care for His creation. In Matthew 6:26 , Jesus teaches, "Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" This passage highlights God's intimate involvement in sustaining life, contrasting with the impersonal notion of Mother Nature.

Additionally, in Job 38-39, God challenges Job with a series of questions about the natural world, demonstrating His intricate knowledge and control over creation. These chapters emphasize God's active role in governing the natural order, from the weather patterns to the behavior of animals.

Human Responsibility

While God is the ultimate authority over nature, the Bible also assigns humans a role in stewarding creation. Genesis 1:28 records God's command to humanity: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth." This mandate entrusts humans with the responsibility to manage and care for the earth, reflecting God's image as stewards of His creation.

In summary, while the term "Mother Nature" is not found in the Bible, the Scriptures provide a comprehensive view of the natural world as God's creation, under His sovereign control and care. Nature is depicted as a testament to God's glory, with humanity given the responsibility to steward it according to His purposes.
