Definition and Meaning:
Nekeb is a term found in the Old Testament, specifically in the context of geographical locations. The word "Nekeb" is derived from the Hebrew root "naqab," which means to pierce or bore through, often implying a pass or a narrow passage. In biblical usage, it typically refers to a specific location or landmark that holds significance in the narrative of the Israelites.

Biblical References:
Nekeb is mentioned in the Book of Numbers as part of the territorial boundaries described for the tribes of Israel. In Numbers 34:11 , the passage states: "The border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain, and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth." While the term "Nekeb" itself is not directly mentioned in this verse, it is understood to be part of the broader geographical context of the region.

Geographical Context:
Nekeb is associated with the northern boundary of the Promised Land as described in the division of the land among the tribes of Israel. It is believed to be located in the region of the Golan Heights, near the Sea of Galilee, known in biblical times as the Sea of Chinnereth. This area was significant for its strategic location and fertile land, making it a valuable asset for the tribes settling in the region.

Historical and Theological Significance:
The mention of Nekeb in the delineation of Israel's borders underscores the importance of land inheritance and territorial integrity in the biblical narrative. The precise boundaries were divinely ordained and were meant to establish a clear and lasting inheritance for the tribes of Israel. This reflects the covenantal relationship between God and His people, where the land serves as a tangible sign of God's promises and faithfulness.

Cultural and Archaeological Insights:
While specific archaeological evidence directly identifying Nekeb is limited, the broader region has been the subject of extensive archaeological study. Discoveries in the Golan Heights and surrounding areas have provided insights into the ancient cultures and civilizations that inhabited the land during biblical times. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the historical context in which the biblical events unfolded.

Conclusion:
Nekeb, as a geographical term, plays a role in the biblical narrative of land division and inheritance. Its mention highlights the importance of territorial boundaries in the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites. Understanding Nekeb within its historical and geographical context enriches the study of the Old Testament and the unfolding of God's redemptive plan for His people.

Nekeb

(cavern), one of the towns on the boundary of Naphtali. (Joshua 19:3) It lay between Adami and Jabneel. A great number of commentators have taken this name as being connected with the preceding.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Cavern, a town on the boundary of Naphtali (Joshua 19:33). It has with probability, been identified with Seiyadeh, nearly 2 miles east of Bessum, a ruin half way between Tiberias and Mount Tabor.

NEKEB

ne'-keb: This name occurs only in combination with "Adami" ('adhami ha-neqebh, "Adami of the pass"); Septuagint reads the names of two places: kai Arme kai Nabok (B); kai Armai kai Nakeb (Joshua 19:33), so we should possibly read "Adami and Nekeb." Neubauer says (Geog. du Talmud, 225) that later the name of Nekeb was Ciyadathah. It may therefore be represented by the modern Seiyadeh, not far from ed-Damieh to the East of Tabor, about 4 miles Southwest of Tiberias. The name of Nekeb, a town in Galilee, appears in the list of Thothmes III.
