Eating: Ablutions Before
Jump to: Nave'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms

In biblical times, the practice of ablutions, or ritual washings, before eating was a significant aspect of daily life, particularly among the Jewish people. This practice was deeply rooted in the cultural and religious traditions of the Israelites and is reflected in various passages of Scripture.

The concept of ritual purity is central to understanding the practice of ablutions before eating. The Mosaic Law, as given to the Israelites, included numerous regulations concerning cleanliness and uncleanliness. These laws were intended to set the Israelites apart as a holy people dedicated to God. In Leviticus, the Lord provides detailed instructions on maintaining ritual purity, which includes washing as a means of purification (Leviticus 11-15).

One of the most notable references to ablutions before eating is found in the New Testament, where the Pharisees and some of the scribes questioned Jesus about His disciples' practices. In Mark 7:1-5 , it is recorded: "The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, and they saw some of His disciples eating with hands that were defiled—that is, unwashed. For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands ceremonially, holding to the tradition of the elders. And on returning from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions for them to observe, including the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches. So the Pharisees and scribes questioned Jesus: 'Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with defiled hands.'"

This passage highlights the tension between the traditional practices of the Jewish leaders and the teachings of Jesus. The Pharisees adhered strictly to the "tradition of the elders," which included ceremonial handwashing before meals. This tradition was not explicitly commanded in the Torah but had developed over time as a means of ensuring ritual purity.

Jesus' response to the Pharisees' question is significant. He challenges their emphasis on external rituals at the expense of inner purity and devotion to God. In Mark 7:6-8 , Jesus replies: "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.' You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men."

The practice of ablutions before eating, while rooted in a desire for ritual purity, became a point of contention when it overshadowed the more profound spiritual truths of the faith. Jesus emphasized that true purity comes from the heart and is not merely a matter of external observance.

In the broader biblical context, the practice of washing before meals can be seen as part of the larger theme of holiness and separation unto God. The Israelites were called to be a distinct people, and their daily practices, including ablutions, were a reflection of their covenant relationship with the Lord. However, as Jesus taught, these practices were to be understood in light of the greater commandments of love and devotion to God.
