The Tribe of Issachar, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, traces its lineage to Issachar, the fifth son of Jacob and Leah. As a significant part of the Israelite confederation, the tribe played a crucial role in the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, as well as in the subsequent settlement and governance of Canaan.

Position in the March and Encampments

During the Israelites' wilderness journey, the tribe of Issachar was strategically positioned in the order of march and encampment. According to the divine instructions given to Moses, the tribes were organized into a specific formation both when encamped and when on the move. This organization is detailed in the Book of Numbers.

In the encampment, the tribes were arranged around the Tabernacle, which was at the center, symbolizing God's presence among His people. The tribe of Issachar was part of the eastern camp, alongside the tribes of Judah and Zebulun. Numbers 2:3-5 states, "On the east side, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard... The tribe of Issachar will camp next to them." This positioning highlights the tribe's close association with Judah, the leading tribe, and Zebulun, forming a cohesive unit.

When the Israelites set out on their journeys, the eastern camp, led by Judah, was the first to break camp and lead the march. Numbers 10:14-15 records, "First, the divisions of the camp of Judah set out under their standard... Next, the divisions of the tribe of Issachar." This prominent position in the march underscores the tribe's importance and readiness to follow God's guidance through the wilderness.

Role and Characteristics

The tribe of Issachar is often noted for its wisdom and understanding of the times. In 1 Chronicles 12:32 , the men of Issachar are described as "men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do." This characteristic made them valuable advisors and leaders within the nation of Israel.

Issachar's territory, once the Israelites settled in Canaan, was located in a fertile region, which contributed to the tribe's prosperity and stability. The land allotted to Issachar included the Jezreel Valley, a strategic and agriculturally rich area. This location further enhanced the tribe's role in the economic and political life of Israel.

Throughout biblical history, the tribe of Issachar remained faithful to its calling, contributing to the spiritual and temporal welfare of the nation. Their strategic position in the encampments and marches, along with their wisdom and understanding, exemplified their integral role in the unfolding narrative of God's people.
