Measure: Must be Just

Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, the concept of just measures is deeply rooted in the moral and ethical teachings of the Scriptures. The Bible emphasizes the importance of honesty and integrity in all dealings, particularly in commerce and trade. The use of just measures is a reflection of one's righteousness and obedience to God's commandments.

The Old Testament provides clear instructions regarding the use of fair and honest measures. In Leviticus 19:35-36 , God commands the Israelites: "You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight, or volume. You shall maintain honest scales and weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt." This directive underscores the importance of fairness and integrity, linking it to the identity of God as the deliverer and lawgiver.

Similarly, in Deuteronomy 25:13-16 , the Israelites are instructed: "You shall not have two differing weights in your bag, one heavy and one light. You shall not have two differing measures in your house, one large and one small. You must maintain accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. For everyone who behaves dishonestly in regard to these things is detestable to the LORD your God." This passage highlights the moral obligation to uphold justice in everyday transactions and the consequences of failing to do so.

The wisdom literature of the Bible also addresses the issue of just measures. Proverbs 11:1 states, "Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but an accurate weight is His delight." This proverb succinctly captures the divine preference for honesty and fairness, portraying dishonest practices as abhorrent to God.

In the prophetic writings, the theme of just measures is reiterated as part of the call to social justice and righteousness. The prophet Micah, in Micah 6:10-11 , questions the integrity of the people: "Am I still to forget, O wicked house, your ill-gotten treasures and the short ephah, which is accursed? Shall I acquit a man with dishonest scales and with a bag of false weights?" Here, the use of unjust measures is condemned as part of a broader critique of societal corruption and injustice.

The New Testament continues to uphold the principle of just measures, emphasizing the broader application of fairness and integrity in all aspects of life. In Luke 6:38 , Jesus teaches, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you." This teaching not only reinforces the importance of fairness but also introduces the concept of reciprocity, where the measure one uses in dealing with others will be the measure used in return.

The biblical mandate for just measures is a call to live a life of integrity, reflecting God's character in all interactions. It serves as a reminder that honesty in small matters is indicative of one's overall faithfulness to God's commands.
