Tabernacle: Sanctified

The concept of the Tabernacle as a sanctified space is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative, serving as a central element in the worship and religious life of the Israelites. The Tabernacle, also known as the Tent of Meeting, was a portable sanctuary that God commanded Moses to construct during the Israelites' journey through the wilderness. It was a place where God would dwell among His people and where they could offer sacrifices and worship Him.

Biblical Foundation

The instructions for building the Tabernacle are detailed in the Book of Exodus. God provided Moses with specific guidelines for its construction, emphasizing the sanctity and holiness of the space. In Exodus 25:8-9 , God commands, "And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them. You must make it according to all that I show you—the pattern of the tabernacle as well as the pattern of all its furnishings."

The sanctification of the Tabernacle is further underscored by the materials used and the rituals performed. The use of gold, silver, and precious fabrics, as well as the anointing of the Tabernacle and its furnishings with sacred oil, set it apart as a holy place. Exodus 30:26-29 describes the anointing process: "Use this oil to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the Ark of the Testimony, the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. You are to consecrate them so that they will be most holy. Whatever touches them will be holy."

Theological Significance

The sanctification of the Tabernacle signifies God's desire to dwell among His people and the necessity of holiness in approaching Him. The Tabernacle served as a microcosm of the heavenly sanctuary, reflecting the divine order and holiness required for communion with God. The presence of the Shekinah glory, a visible manifestation of God's presence, further emphasized the sanctity of the Tabernacle.

The Tabernacle's design, with its outer court, Holy Place, and Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies), symbolized the progressive levels of holiness and the separation between God and humanity due to sin. Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement, to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16).

Christological Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the sanctified Tabernacle finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The Gospel of John presents Jesus as the true Tabernacle, stating, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us" (John 1:14). The Greek word for "dwelling" (σκηνόω, skēnoō) is related to the Hebrew word for "tabernacle," indicating that Jesus is the ultimate manifestation of God's presence among His people.

The Epistle to the Hebrews further elaborates on this theme, explaining that Christ entered the greater and more perfect tabernacle in heaven, offering His own blood as a once-for-all sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 9:11-12). This act of atonement sanctifies believers, allowing them direct access to God through faith in Christ.

Practical Implications

The sanctification of the Tabernacle serves as a reminder of the holiness required in worship and the reverence due to God. It calls believers to live sanctified lives, set apart for God's purposes, as they become the living temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The Tabernacle's emphasis on holiness and divine presence continues to inspire and instruct the faithful in their spiritual journey.
