Our Temporal Existence

Our temporal existence refers to the finite and transient nature of human life on earth, as contrasted with the eternal life promised to believers in the afterlife. This concept is deeply rooted in the Scriptures, which frequently remind us of the brevity and fragility of human life, urging us to live with an eternal perspective.

Biblical Perspective on Life's Transience

The Bible often uses metaphors to describe the fleeting nature of human life. In James 4:14 , it is written, "You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." This imagery underscores the ephemeral quality of our earthly existence, likening it to a vapor that quickly dissipates.

Similarly, Psalm 90:10 reflects on the limited span of human life: "The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty if we are strong—yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away." This passage highlights the brevity of life, even for those who live to an advanced age, and the inevitability of its end.

The Purpose of Our Temporal Existence

While our time on earth is short, the Bible teaches that it is purposeful. Ecclesiastes 12:13 states, "When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man." Our temporal existence is an opportunity to live in obedience to God, to cultivate a relationship with Him, and to fulfill His commandments.

Ephesians 5:15-16 exhorts believers to "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." This passage encourages Christians to live wisely and purposefully, making the most of the time they have been given.

Eternal Perspective and Hope

The transient nature of our earthly life is set against the backdrop of eternity. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 offers hope and perspective: "For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that is far beyond comparison. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." This passage encourages believers to focus on the eternal rewards and glory that await them, rather than the temporary struggles of this life.

Philippians 3:20-21 reminds Christians of their true citizenship: "But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to subject all things to Himself, will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body." This heavenly citizenship provides a framework for understanding our temporal existence as a preparation for the eternal life to come.

Living with Eternity in Mind

The Scriptures call believers to live with an eternal mindset, recognizing that our time on earth is a preparation for the life to come. Colossians 3:1-2 instructs, "Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." This directive encourages Christians to prioritize spiritual matters and eternal values over temporal concerns.

In summary, our temporal existence is a brief but significant part of God's eternal plan. The Bible teaches that while life on earth is fleeting, it is filled with purpose and opportunity for those who live in obedience to God and with an eternal perspective.
