Definition and Background:
Horoscopes are astrological charts or diagrams representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and astrological aspects at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth. They are used in astrology to predict future events and provide insights into personal characteristics and life circumstances. The practice of reading horoscopes is rooted in ancient traditions that seek to interpret celestial phenomena as having influence over human affairs.

Biblical Perspective:
The Bible does not specifically mention horoscopes, but it addresses related practices such as astrology, divination, and seeking omens. Scripture consistently warns against engaging in these practices, as they are seen as contrary to reliance on God and His guidance.

Old Testament References:
In the Old Testament, astrology and divination are often associated with pagan practices. The Israelites were instructed to avoid such practices as they entered the Promised Land. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 states: "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices divination or conjury, interprets omens, practices sorcery, casts spells, consults a medium or spiritist, or inquires of the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable things the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you."

The prophet Isaiah also speaks against the reliance on astrologers. In Isaiah 47:13-14 , he challenges the Babylonians: "You are wearied by your many counselors; let them stand up now and save you—those who divide the heavens and gaze at the stars, who predict the new moons and proclaim what will happen to you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame."

New Testament References:
The New Testament continues the theme of rejecting practices that seek guidance apart from God. In Acts 19:19 , we see the response of new believers in Ephesus who had previously practiced sorcery: "And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in front of everyone. When the value of the books was calculated, it came to fifty thousand drachmas."

Theological Implications:
From a biblical standpoint, reading horoscopes is seen as a form of divination, which is condemned in Scripture. The practice is viewed as an attempt to gain knowledge or control over the future apart from God. This reliance on celestial bodies and astrological signs is considered a form of idolatry, as it places trust in creation rather than the Creator.

Christian Life and Practice:
Christians are encouraged to seek guidance and wisdom from God through prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit. James 1:5 advises believers: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." Trusting in God's sovereignty and His plans is emphasized over seeking knowledge through horoscopes or other forms of divination.

Conclusion:
While horoscopes and astrology may be popular in contemporary culture, the biblical perspective urges believers to avoid these practices and instead place their trust in God for guidance and understanding.

And lest you lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, should be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD your God has divided to all nations under the whole heaven.
