The Messenger/Herald

In biblical literature, the terms "messenger" and "herald" are often used interchangeably to describe individuals or beings who are tasked with delivering messages from God to humans. These roles are significant throughout both the Old and New Testaments, serving as conduits for divine communication and instruction.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "mal'ak" is commonly translated as "messenger" or "angel." These messengers often appear as divine beings sent by God to deliver specific messages or to carry out His will. For example, in Genesis 19, two angels (messengers) are sent to Sodom to warn Lot of the impending destruction: "The two men said to Lot, 'Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here'" (Genesis 19:12).

Prophets also served as messengers of God, delivering His words to the people of Israel. Malachi, whose name means "my messenger," is a prime example. In Malachi 3:1, the prophet speaks of a future messenger: "Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming, says the LORD of Hosts" (Malachi 3:1).

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the Greek word "angelos" is used for "messenger" or "angel." The role of the messenger is further expanded with the coming of John the Baptist, who is identified as the herald preparing the way for Jesus Christ. In Matthew 11:10, Jesus refers to John the Baptist as the messenger foretold in Malachi: "This is the one about whom it is written: 'Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You'" (Matthew 11:10).

Angelic messengers also play a crucial role in the New Testament narrative. The angel Gabriel is sent to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus: "The angel went to her and said, 'Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you'" (Luke 1:28). Similarly, angels announce the resurrection of Jesus to the women at the tomb: "But the angel said to the women, 'Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said'" (Matthew 28:5-6).

Symbolic and Eschatological Roles

Messengers in the Bible also carry symbolic and eschatological significance. In the Book of Revelation, angels serve as messengers of God's final judgment and the unfolding of end-time events. Revelation 14:6 describes an angel proclaiming the eternal gospel: "Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language, and people" (Revelation 14:6).

Conclusion

Throughout Scripture, messengers and heralds are pivotal in conveying God's messages, whether through divine beings or human prophets. They serve as vital links between the divine and human realms, ensuring that God's will and purposes are communicated and fulfilled.
