The Temple Articles refer to the sacred objects and furnishings used in the worship and rituals of the Temple in Jerusalem, as described in the Old Testament. These articles were integral to the religious life of Israel and were meticulously crafted according to divine instructions given to Moses and later to King David and Solomon. They symbolize various aspects of the covenant relationship between God and His people.

The Ark of the Covenant

Central to the Temple Articles is the Ark of the Covenant, a gold-covered wooden chest containing the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod, and a pot of manna (Hebrews 9:4). The Ark was housed in the Most Holy Place, or the Holy of Holies, and represented God's throne on earth. It was the focal point of God's presence and the place where the high priest would sprinkle the blood of the atonement on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:14-15).

The Altar of Burnt Offering

Located in the Temple courtyard, the Altar of Burnt Offering was made of bronze and used for animal sacrifices (Exodus 27:1-8). It symbolized atonement and reconciliation with God, as the blood of the sacrifices was offered to cover the sins of the people.

The Bronze Sea and Lavers

The Bronze Sea, a large basin for ceremonial washing, was supported by twelve oxen and used by the priests for purification (1 Kings 7:23-26). Additionally, ten smaller bronze lavers were used for washing the offerings (2 Chronicles 4:6).

The Golden Lampstand (Menorah)

The Golden Lampstand, or Menorah, was placed in the Holy Place and provided light within the Temple (Exodus 25:31-40). It had seven branches and was made of pure gold. The Menorah symbolized the light of God's presence and His guidance.

The Table of Showbread

Also located in the Holy Place, the Table of Showbread held twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 25:23-30). The bread was replaced weekly and symbolized God's provision and fellowship with His people.

The Altar of Incense

The Altar of Incense was situated before the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (Exodus 30:1-10). Incense was burned on this altar every morning and evening, symbolizing the prayers of the people ascending to God (Psalm 141:2).

The Veil

The Veil was a heavy curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (Exodus 26:31-33). It symbolized the barrier between a holy God and sinful humanity. The tearing of the veil at the moment of Christ's death (Matthew 27:51) signifies the new access to God made possible through Jesus' sacrifice.

Other Articles

Additional articles included various utensils, such as bowls, censers, and shovels, used in the Temple services (1 Kings 7:40-50). Each item was crafted with precision and care, reflecting the holiness and majesty of God.

The Temple Articles, as described in the Scriptures, were not merely functional objects but were imbued with deep spiritual significance. They pointed to the holiness of God, the sinfulness of humanity, and the need for atonement and reconciliation. Through these articles, the Israelites were reminded of their covenant relationship with God and their call to be a holy nation.
