Baptism: Faith Necessary To

Baptism, a sacrament and ordinance of the Christian faith, signifies the believer's identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is an outward expression of an inward faith and commitment to follow Christ. The necessity of faith in the act of baptism is underscored throughout the New Testament, emphasizing that baptism without faith is incomplete and lacks the transformative power intended by this sacred rite.

Biblical Foundation

The New Testament provides numerous instances where faith is closely linked with baptism. In the Great Commission, Jesus commands His disciples, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). This directive implies that baptism follows the making of disciples, which inherently involves the teaching and acceptance of faith in Christ.

Faith and Baptism in the Early Church

The Book of Acts provides several examples where faith precedes baptism. In Acts 2:38, Peter addresses the crowd at Pentecost, saying, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" . Here, repentance, a component of faith, is a prerequisite for baptism.

Similarly, the account of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:36-37 illustrates the necessity of faith. As they traveled along the road, the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. What can prevent me from being baptized?" Philip replied, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." The eunuch answered, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God" . This confession of faith was essential before the act of baptism could be performed.

Theological Implications

The Apostle Paul further elaborates on the relationship between faith and baptism in his epistles. In Romans 6:3-4, he writes, "Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life" . This passage highlights that baptism is not merely a ritual but a profound spiritual union with Christ, made possible through faith.

In Galatians 3:26-27, Paul states, "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ" . Here, faith is the means by which believers become children of God, and baptism is the outward expression of this new identity.

Faith as a Prerequisite

The necessity of faith for baptism is further emphasized in the context of the New Covenant. Hebrews 11:6 declares, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him" . This principle underscores that faith is foundational to any act of obedience, including baptism.

In summary, the New Testament consistently presents baptism as an act that follows a personal confession of faith in Jesus Christ. It is through faith that believers enter into the covenant relationship with God, and baptism serves as the public declaration of this faith.
