Fruits: Divided Into: Goodly

In the biblical context, fruits often symbolize the results of one's actions, spiritual growth, and the blessings bestowed by God. The term "goodly fruits" refers to those that are desirable, beneficial, and pleasing in the sight of God. These fruits can be understood both literally, as in the produce of the land, and metaphorically, as in the fruits of the Spirit and righteous living.

Literal Goodly Fruits

The Bible frequently mentions goodly fruits in the context of the Promised Land, a place flowing with milk and honey, abundant in resources and produce. In Deuteronomy 8:8, the land is described as "a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey." These fruits are considered goodly because they are gifts from God, providing sustenance and prosperity to His people.

The Song of Solomon also uses the imagery of goodly fruits to describe beauty and abundance. In Song of Solomon 4:13-14 , the beloved is likened to "an orchard of pomegranates with choice fruits, with henna and nard, nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all the trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes, with all the finest spices." Here, the goodly fruits symbolize the richness and delight found in love and devotion.

Metaphorical Goodly Fruits

In a metaphorical sense, goodly fruits represent the virtues and qualities that are pleasing to God. The New Testament emphasizes the importance of bearing spiritual fruit as evidence of a life transformed by faith in Christ. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruits of the Spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." These are considered goodly because they reflect the character of God and the work of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life.

Jesus Himself taught about the significance of bearing good fruit. In Matthew 7:17-18 , He states, "Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit." This teaching underscores the idea that a life rooted in Christ will naturally produce goodly fruits, manifesting in righteous actions and attitudes.

The Role of Goodly Fruits in Christian Life

Goodly fruits are not only a sign of spiritual health but also a means of glorifying God. In John 15:8 , Jesus declares, "This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples." The production of goodly fruits is thus an integral part of the Christian witness, demonstrating the transformative power of the Gospel.

Moreover, the cultivation of goodly fruits requires intentionality and reliance on God's grace. Philippians 1:11 speaks of being "filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." This verse highlights the necessity of abiding in Christ and allowing His righteousness to work through believers, resulting in a life that bears goodly fruits.

In summary, goodly fruits in the Bible encompass both the literal bounty of the earth and the spiritual virtues that characterize a life devoted to God. They serve as a testament to God's provision and the transformative work of His Spirit in the lives of His people.
