Sickness: Faith Required in Those Healed of, by Christ

In the New Testament, the healing ministry of Jesus Christ is a profound testament to His divine authority and compassion. Central to many of these miraculous healings is the element of faith, which is often highlighted as a prerequisite or accompanying factor in the healing process. The Gospels provide numerous accounts where faith is explicitly mentioned as a key component in the healing of the sick.

The Healing of the Woman with the Issue of Blood

One of the most illustrative examples of faith in healing is the account of the woman with the issue of blood, as recorded in the Synoptic Gospels. In Mark 5:25-34 , a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years approached Jesus in a crowd, believing that touching His garment would heal her. Her faith is acknowledged by Jesus, who says, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction" (Mark 5:34). This narrative underscores the belief that faith, even when expressed in a seemingly small act, can lead to divine intervention and healing.

The Healing of the Centurion’s Servant

Another significant account is the healing of the centurion’s servant, found in Matthew 8:5-13 . A Roman centurion approached Jesus, expressing his unworthiness for Jesus to enter his home but confident that a mere word from Jesus would heal his servant. Jesus marveled at the centurion’s faith, stating, "Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith" (Matthew 8:10). The servant was healed at that very moment, illustrating that faith can transcend cultural and religious boundaries, and that Jesus responds to genuine belief.

The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

The healing of Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, further emphasizes the necessity of faith. In Mark 10:46-52 , Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for mercy. Despite being rebuked by the crowd, he persists, demonstrating his faith in Jesus’ ability to heal. Jesus responds, "Go, your faith has healed you," and immediately Bartimaeus receives his sight (Mark 10:52). This account highlights the persistence of faith and its role in receiving healing.

The Healing of the Ten Lepers

In Luke 17:11-19 , Jesus heals ten lepers, but only one, a Samaritan, returns to give thanks. Jesus notes the man’s faith, saying, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well" (Luke 17:19). This account not only underscores the importance of faith but also gratitude, as the leper’s return to thank Jesus is linked to his faith.

The Healing of Jairus’ Daughter

The account of Jairus’ daughter, found in Mark 5:21-43 , intertwines with the account of the woman with the issue of blood. Jairus, a synagogue leader, approaches Jesus with faith that He can heal his dying daughter. Despite news of her death, Jesus encourages Jairus, saying, "Do not be afraid; just believe" (Mark 5:36). Jesus raises the girl from the dead, demonstrating that faith is crucial even in seemingly hopeless situations.

The Role of Faith in Healing

Throughout these accounts, faith is not merely a passive belief but an active trust in Jesus’ power and willingness to heal. It is often accompanied by actions that demonstrate reliance on Christ, whether it be reaching out to touch His garment, speaking words of faith, or persisting in calling out to Him. These narratives collectively affirm that faith is a vital component in the healing miracles performed by Jesus, serving as a conduit through which divine power is manifested.
