1 Chronicles 2

The Sons of Israel
(Genesis 35:21–26; Genesis 38:1–30)

1These were the sons of Israel (he wrestles with God):

Reuben (behold a son), Simeon (heard), Levi (joined to), Judah (praised), Issachar (there is recompense), Zebulun (exalted), 2Dan (He has judged), Joseph (YHWH has added), Benjamin (son of the right hand), Naphtali (wrestling), Gad (troop), and Asher (happy).

3The sons of Judah (praised):

Er (awake), Onan (strong), and Shelah (a petition). These three were born to him by Bath-shua (wealth) the Canaanite (merchant). Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD {YHWH}. So the LORD put him to death.

4Tamar (palm-tree), Judah’s daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez (breaking out) and Zerah (rising). Judah (praised) had five sons in all.

5The sons of Perez (breaking out):

Hezron (surrounded by a wall) and Hamul (spared).

6The sons of Zerah (rising):

Zimri (Zabdi),a Ethan (enduring), Heman (faithful), Calcol (sustaining), and Dara [Darda]b—five in all.

7The son \sons/c of Carmi (my vineyard):

Achar (troubler),d who brought trouble upon Israel (he wrestles with God) by violating the ban on devoted things.

8The son of Ethan (enduring):

Azariah (YHWH has helped).

9The sons who were born to Hezron (surrounded by a wall):

Jerahmeel (may God have pity), Ram (exalted), and Caleb {Chelubai}.e

10Ram (exalted) was the father of Amminadab (my kinsman is noble), and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon (enchanter), a leader of the descendants of Judah (praised).

11Nahshon (enchanter) was the father of Salmon (garment),f and Salmon was the father of Boaz (fleetness).

12Boaz (fleetness) was the father of Obed (serving), and Obed was the father of Jesse (I possess).

13Jesse (I possess) was the father of Eliab (God is father) his firstborn; Abinadab (my father is willing) was born second, Shimea (Shimei)g third, 14Nethanel (given of God) fourth, Raddai (trampling) fifth, 15Ozem (I shall hasten them) sixth, and David (beloved) seventh. 16Their sisters were Zeruiah (balsam) and Abigail (my father is joy). And the three sons of Zeruiah were Abishai (my father is a gift), Joab (YHWH is father), and Asahel (God-made). 17Abigail (my father is joy) was the mother of Amasa (burden), whose father was Jether (Ithra)h the Ishmaelite.

18Caleb (dog) son of Hezron (surrounded by a wall) had children by his wife Azubah (forsaken) and by Jerioth (curtains). These were the sons of Azubah: Jesher (upright), Shobab (rebellious), and Ardon (subduer). 19When Azubah (forsaken) died, Caleb (dog) married Ephrath (Ephrathah),i who bore to him Hur (hole). 20Hur (hole) was the father of Uri (fiery), and Uri was the father of Bezalel (in the shadow of God).

21Later, Hezron (surrounded by a wall) slept with the daughter of Machir (sold) the father of Gilead (rocky region). He had married her when he was sixty years old, and she bore to him Segub (exalted). 22Segub (exalted) was the father of Jair (he enlightens), who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead (rocky region). 23But Geshur (proud beholder) and Aram (exalted) captured Havvoth-jair (villages of Jair),j along with Kenath (possession) and its sixty surrounding villages. All these were descendants of Machir (sold) the father of Gilead (rocky region).

24After Hezron (surrounded by a wall) died in Caleb-ephrathah (ash heap), his wife Abijah (YHWH is my father) borek to him Ashhur (black) the father (the founder)l of Tekoa (a stockade).

25The sons of Jerahmeel (may God have pity) the firstborn of Hezron (surrounded by a wall):

Ram (exalted) his firstborn, Bunah (intelligence), Oren (cedar), Ozem (I shall hasten them), and Ahijah (brother of Yah). 26Jerahmeel (may God have pity) had another wife named Atarah (a crown), who was the mother of Onam (vigorous).

27The sons of Ram (exalted) the firstborn of Jerahmeel (may God have pity):

Maaz (wrath), Jamin (right hand), and Eker (offspring).

28The sons of Onam (vigorous):

Shammai (desolate) and Jada (He knows).

The sons of Shammai:

Nadab (generous) and Abishur (my father is a wall). 29Abishur’s (my father is a wall) wife was named Abihail (my father is might), and she bore to him Ahban (brother of an understanding one) and Molid (begetter).

30The sons of Nadab (generous):

Seled (exultation) and Appaim (nostrils). Seled died without children.

31The son \sons/m of Appaim (nostrils):

Ishi (He saves me).

The son of Ishi:

Sheshan (noble).

The son of Sheshan:

Ahlai (would that!).

32The sons of Jada (He knows) the brother of Shammai (desolate):

Jether (abundance) and Jonathan (YHWH has given). Jether died without children.

33The sons of Jonathan (YHWH has given):

Peleth (swiftness) and Zaza (brightness / fulness).

These were the descendants of Jerahmeel (may God have pity).

34Sheshan (noble) had no sons, but only daughters. He also had an Egyptian (double straits) servant named Jarha (the month of sweeping away). 35Sheshan (noble) gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha (the month of sweeping away), and she bore to him Attai (opportune).

36Attai (opportune) was the father of Nathan (giver), Nathan was the father of Zabad (he endows), 37Zabad (he endows) was the father of Ephlal (intercessor), Ephlal was the father of Obed (serving), 38Obed (serving) was the father of Jehu (YHWH is He), Jehu was the father of Azariah (YHWH has helped), 39Azariah (YHWH has helped) was the father of Helez (he has saved), Helez was the father of Elasah (God has made), 40Elasah (God has made) was the father of Sismai (water crane / swallow), Sismai was the father of Shallum (retribution), 41Shallum (retribution) was the father of Jekamiah, and Jekamiah (YHWH raises) was the father of Elishama (my God has heard).

42The sons of Caleb (dog) the brother of Jerahmeel (may God have pity):

Mesha [Mareshah]n his firstborn, who was the father of Ziph (battlement), and Mareshah (crest of a hill) his second son, who was the father of Hebron (association).

43The sons of Hebron (association):

Korah (bald), Tappuah (the apple city), Rekem (variegation), and Shema (hear). 44Shema (hear) was the father of Raham (belly) the father of Jorkeam (the people empty), and Rekem (variegation) was the father of Shammai (desolate). 45The son of Shammai (desolate) was Maon (habitation), and Maon was the father of Beth-zur (house of the rock).

46Caleb’s (dog) concubine Ephah (gloomy) was the mother of Haran (mountaineer), Moza (fountain), and Gazez (shearer). Haran was the father of Gazez.

47The sons of Jahdai:

Regem (friend), Jotham (YHWH is perfect), Geshan (lump), Pelet (deliverance), Ephah (gloomy), and Shaaph (division).

48Caleb’s (dog) concubine Maacah (oppression) was the mother of Sheber (breaking) and Tirhanah (favor). 49She was also the mother of Shaaph (division) father of Madmannah (dunghill), and of Sheva (YHWH contends) father of Machbenah (bond) and Gibea (hill). Caleb’s (dog) daughter was Acsah (anklet). 50These were the descendants of Caleb (dog).

The sons [son]o of Hur (hole) the firstborn of Ephrathah (Ephrath):p

Shobal (flowing) the father of Kiriath-jearim (city of forests), 51Salma (garment) the father of Bethlehem (house of bread), and Hareph (a plucking off) the father of Beth-gader (house of the wall).

52These were the descendants of Shobal (flowing) the father of Kiriath-jearim (city of forests):

Haroeh (vision), half the Manahathites (rest), 53and the clans of Kiriath-jearim (city of forests)—the Ithrites (a remnant), Puthites (openess), Shumathites (the exalted), and Mishraites (touching evil). From these descended the Zorathites and Eshtaolites (I will be entreated).

54The descendants of Salma (garment):

Bethlehem (house of bread), the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab (crowns of the house of Joab), half the Manahathites (rest), the Zorites, 55and the clans of the scribes (of the Sopherites)q who lived at Jabez (sorrow)—the Tirathites (men of the gate), Shimeathites, and Sucathites (bush-men). These are the Kenites (smiths) who came from Hammath (hot spring), the father of the house of Rechab (the father of Beth-rekab).r
