Yahweh Calls Samuel

1  וְהַנַּ֧עַר (And the boy) שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל (Samuel) מְשָׁרֵ֥ת (ministered) אֶת־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) עֵלִ֑י (Eli).

וּדְבַר־ (And the word) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) הָיָ֤ה (was) יָקָר֙ (rare) בַּיָּמִ֣ים (in the days) הָהֵ֔ם (those); אֵ֥ין (there was no) חָז֖וֹן (vision) נִפְרָֽץ׃ס (broken forth). 2  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (at the time) הַה֔וּא (that), וְעֵלִ֖י (and while Eli) שֹׁכֵ֣ב (was lying down) בִּמְקֹמ֑וֹ (in his place) וְעֵינוֹ (and his eyes) הֵחֵ֣לּוּ (had begun) כֵה֔וֹת (to be dim), לֹ֥א (not) יוּכַ֖ל (that he could) לִרְאֽוֹת׃ (see), 3  וְנֵ֤ר (and the lamp) אֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) טֶ֣רֶם (not yet) יִכְבֶּ֔ה (was extinguished), וּשְׁמוּאֵ֖ל (and Samuel) שֹׁכֵ֑ב (was lying down) בְּהֵיכַ֣ל (in the temple) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) שָׁ֖ם (there was) אֲר֥וֹן (the ark) אֱלֹהִֽים׃פ (of God), 4  וַיִּקְרָ֧א (that called) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל (Samuel). וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he answered), הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (Behold).

5  וַיָּ֣רָץ (And he ran) אֶל־ (to) עֵלִ֗י (Eli) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said), הִנְנִי֙ (Behold), כִּֽי־ (for) קָרָ֣אתָ (you have called) לִּ֔י (me).

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said), לֹֽא־ (Not) קָרָ֖אתִי (I did call). שׁ֣וּב (Turn back), שְׁכָ֑ב (lie down).

וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (And he went) וַיִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ס (and lay down).

6  וַיֹּ֣סֶף (And added), יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) קְרֹ֣א (to call) עוֹד֮ (again), שְׁמוּאֵל֒ (Samuel)!

וַיָּ֤קָם (And arose) שְׁמוּאֵל֙ (Samuel) וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went) אֶל־ (to) עֵלִ֔י (Eli), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said), הִנְנִ֔י (Behold), כִּ֥י (for) קָרָ֖אתָ (you called) לִ֑י (me).

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (And He answered), לֹֽא־ (Not), קָרָ֥אתִי (I did call), בְנִ֖י (my son). שׁ֥וּב (Turn back); שְׁכָֽב׃ (lie down).

7  וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל (And Samuel) טֶ֖רֶם (not) יָדַ֣ע (did know) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וְטֶ֛רֶם (yet) יִגָּלֶ֥ה (was revealed) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 8  וַיֹּ֨סֶף (And again) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) קְרֹא־ (called) שְׁמוּאֵל֮ (Samuel) בַּשְּׁלִשִׁית֒ (the third time), וַיָּ֙קָם֙ (and he arose) וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went) אֶל־ (to) עֵלִ֔י (Eli) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said), הִנְנִ֔י (Behold), כִּ֥י (for) קָרָ֖אתָ (you did call) לִ֑י (me).

וַיָּ֣בֶן (And perceived) עֵלִ֔י (Eli) כִּ֥י (that) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) קֹרֵ֥א (had called) לַנָּֽעַר׃ (the boy). 9  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) עֵלִ֣י (Eli) לִשְׁמוּאֵל֮ (to Samuel), לֵ֣ךְ (Go), שְׁכָב֒ (lie down), וְהָיָה֙ (and it shall come to pass), אִם־ (if) יִקְרָ֣א (He calls) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you), וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ (that you shall say), דַּבֵּ֣ר (Speak), יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כִּ֥י (for) שֹׁמֵ֖עַ (is listening) עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (Your servant).

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל (Samuel) וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב (and lay down) בִּמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃ (in his place).

10  וַיָּבֹ֤א (And came) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), וַיִּתְיַצַּ֔ב (and stationed Himself) וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and called) כְפַֽעַם־ (as at other) בְּפַ֖עַם (times), שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל׀ (Samuel), שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל (Samuel).

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And answered) שְׁמוּאֵל֙ (Samuel), דַּבֵּ֔ר (Speak), כִּ֥י (for) שֹׁמֵ֖עַ (is listening) עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃פ (Your servant).

11  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל (Samuel), הִנֵּ֧ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֛י (I) עֹשֶׂ֥ה (am doing) דָבָ֖ר (a thing) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel), אֲשֶׁר֙ (at which) כָּל־ (of everyone) שֹׁ֣מְע֔וֹ (who hears it), תְּצִלֶּ֖ינָה (will tingle) שְׁתֵּ֥י (the two) אָזְנָֽיו׃ (of their ears). 12  בַּיּ֤וֹם (In the day) הַהוּא֙ (that) אָקִ֣ים (I will establish) אֶל־ (against) עֵלִ֔י (Eli) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (I have spoken) אֶל־ (concerning) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house), הָחֵ֖ל (from beginning) וְכַלֵּֽה׃ (and to end). 13  וְהִגַּ֣דְתִּי (And for I have told) ל֔וֹ (him) כִּֽי־ (that) שֹׁפֵ֥ט (will judge) אֲנִ֛י (I) אֶת־ (-) בֵּית֖וֹ (his house) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֑ם (forever) בַּעֲוֺ֣ן (for the iniquity) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יָדַ֗ע (he knows), כִּֽי־ (because) מְקַֽלְלִ֤ים (made vile) לָהֶם֙ (themselves) בָּנָ֔יו (his sons), וְלֹ֥א (and not) כִהָ֖ה (he did restrain) בָּֽם׃ (them). 14  וְלָכֵ֥ן (And now) נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי (I have sworn) לְבֵ֣ית (to the house) עֵלִ֑י (of Eli), אִֽם־ (Not) יִתְכַּפֵּ֞ר (shall be atoned for) עֲוֺ֧ן (the iniquity) בֵּית־ (of the house) עֵלִ֛י (of Eli) בְּזֶ֥בַח (by sacrifice) וּבְמִנְחָ֖ה (or by offering) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

Samuel Shares the Vision

15  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And lay down) שְׁמוּאֵל֙ (Samuel) עַד־ (until) הַבֹּ֔קֶר (the morning), וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח (and he opened) אֶת־ (-) דַּלְת֣וֹת (the doors) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). וּשְׁמוּאֵ֣ל (And Samuel) יָרֵ֔א (was afraid) מֵהַגִּ֥יד (to tell) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּרְאָ֖ה (the vision) אֶל־ (to) עֵלִֽי׃ (Eli). 16  וַיִּקְרָ֤א (And called) עֵלִי֙ (Eli) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל (Samuel), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and said), שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל (Samuel), בְּנִ֑י (my son).

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he answered), הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (Behold).

17  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), מָ֤ה (What is) הַדָּבָר֙ (the word) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (He has spoken) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you)? אַל־ (Not) נָ֥א (please) תְכַחֵ֖ד (do hide it) מִמֶּ֑נִּי (from me). כֹּ֣ה (Thus) יַעֲשֶׂה־ (may do) לְּךָ֤ (to you) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God), וְכֹ֣ה (and even) יוֹסִ֔יף (more), אִם־ (if) תְּכַחֵ֤ד (you hide) מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ (from me) דָּבָ֔ר (anything) מִכָּל־ (of all) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the words) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He has spoken) אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ (to you).

18  וַיַּגֶּד־ (And told) ל֤וֹ (to him) שְׁמוּאֵל֙ (Samuel) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֔ים (the words), וְלֹ֥א (and nothing) כִחֵ֖ד (he hid) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from him).

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (And he said), יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) ה֔וּא (it is). הַטּ֥וֹב (What is good) בְּעֵינָ֖ו (in His eyes) יַעֲשֶֽׂה׃פ (let Him do).

19  וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל (And grew) שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל (Samuel), וַֽיהוָה֙ (and YHWH) הָיָ֣ה (was) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) הִפִּ֥יל (let fall) מִכָּל־ (any) דְּבָרָ֖יו (of his words) אָֽרְצָה׃ (to the ground).

20  וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ (And knew) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), מִדָּ֖ן (from Dan) וְעַד־ (and to) בְּאֵ֣ר (Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), כִּ֚י (that) נֶאֱמָ֣ן (was established) שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל (Samuel) לְנָבִ֖יא (as a prophet) לַיהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 21  וַיֹּ֥סֶף (And again) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְהֵרָאֹ֣ה (appeared) בְשִׁלֹ֑ה (in Shiloh), כִּֽי־ (for) נִגְלָ֨ה (revealed Himself) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל (Samuel) בְּשִׁל֖וֹ (in Shiloh) בִּדְבַ֥ר (by the word) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH).
