Faith and Belief
(James 2:14–26)

1O foolish Galatians, who has been bewitching you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was set forth having been crucified? 2I only wish to learn this from you, Did you receive the Spirit by works of law, or by hearing of faith? 3Are you so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect in the flesh? 4Have you suffered so many things in vain? if indeed in vain. 5Then did the one imparting to you the Spirit, and working miracles, among you, do it by works of law, or by hearing of faith?

6As Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 7Then know that those who are of faith, the same are the sons of Abraham. 8But the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, That in thee shall all the Gentiles be blessed. 9Therefore those who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Christ Has Redeemed Us

10For so many as are of works of law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who does not abide in all things which have been written in the book of the law, to do the same. 11But that no one is justified by law in the sight of God, is evident: because, The just shall live by faith: 12though the law is not of faith; but the one having done these things shall live in them. 13Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: because it has been written; Cursed is every one having been hung on the wood: 14in order that the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus may come to the Gentiles; in order that we may receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The Purpose of the Law
(Romans 7:1–6)

15Brethren, I speak according to a man, nevertheless no one disannuls, or adds to, the covenant of a man which has been confirmed. 16But the promises were spoken to Abraham and his seed. He does not say, And unto seeds, as of many; but as of one; And thy seed, which is Christ. 17And I say this; The law which was given after four hundred and thirty years, does not disannul the covenant which had been before confirmed of God, so as to make the promise of none effect. 18For if the inheritance were by law, it is no more by promise: but God gave it to Abraham through the promise.

19Then what is the law? It was added on account of the transgressions, until the seed to whom the promise was made should come; being ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. 20A mediator is not of one; but God is one. 21Then was the law against the promises of God? it could not be so. For if the law was given being able to create life, truly justification would have been by law: 22but the scripture has shut up all things unto sin, in order that the promise through faith of Jesus Christ may be given to those who believe.

23But before faith came, we were kept under law, being shut up to the faith about to be revealed. 24Therefore the law became our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ, in order that we may be justified by faith; 25but faith having come, we are no longer under the schoolmaster.

Sons through Faith in Christ

26For you are all the sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus; 27for so many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is no longer Jew nor Greek, nor bond nor free, nor male and female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29But if you belong to Christ then you are the seed of Abraham, heirs according to the promise.
