Matthew 3
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1And in those days, John the Baptist comes preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2And saying, Repent: for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.

3For this is the One having been spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight (direct).

4And John himself had his apparel from hair of a camel, and a belt of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan, 6And were baptized in the Jordan River by him, confessing their sins.

7And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming upon his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers (poisonous snakes), who warned you to flee from the wrath about to be? 8Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentence. 9And do not suppose (presume) to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I say to you that God is able from out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10And the ax is already applied to the root of the trees: every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut out and thrown into the fire.

11I indeed baptize in water unto repentence; however after me is coming He that is mightier (abler, stronger) than I, of whom the sandals I am not fit to carry (bear). He will baptize in the Holy Spirit and fire. 12Of whom the winnowing pitchfork is in His hand; and He will thoroughly purge His threshing floor, and will gather together His grain into the storehouse (granary, barn, repository); however He will burn up (katakaio- burn down/against) with unquenchable fire.

13Then Jesus arrives from Galilee upon the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. 14However John forbade Him, saying, I have necessity to be baptized by You and You come to me? 15However answering, Jesus said to him, Permit it now; for it is thus fitting to us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he permits Him. 16And having been baptized, Jesus directly went up away from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending (coming down) like as a dove, and coming upon Him. 17And behold, a voice from out of the heavens, saying, This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased.
