Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.5Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.
But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.6But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.
Abraham lived a total of 175 years.7These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years.
And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died, old and contented, and was gathered to his people.8Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite.9Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,
This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.10the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife.
After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi.11After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.
This is the account of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham.12These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham.
These are the names of the sons of Ishmael in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,13These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,14Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.15Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These were the sons of Ishmael, and these were their names by their villages and encampments—twelve princes of their tribes.16These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes.
Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.17(These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.)
Ishmael’s descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which is near the border of Egypt as you go toward Asshur. And they lived in hostility toward all their brothers.18They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria. He settled over against all his kinsmen.
This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac,19These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac,
and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.20and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.
Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.21And Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So Rebekah went to inquire of the LORD,22The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the LORD.
and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”23And the LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”
When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.24When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb.
The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau.25The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau.
After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.26Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.27When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.
Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau; but Rebekah loved Jacob.28Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished.29Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.
He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.)30And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.)
“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied.31Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.”
“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?”32Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?”
“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright.33Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
