Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, | 1Paul, called as an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Sosthenes our brother: |
To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours: | 2To God's church at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord--both their Lord and ours. |
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
I always thank my God for you because of the grace He has given you in Christ Jesus. | 4I always thank my God for you because of God's grace given to you in Christ Jesus, |
For in Him you have been enriched in every way, in all speech and all knowledge, | 5that by Him you were enriched in everything--in all speech and all knowledge. |
because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. | 6In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you, |
Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 7so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. | 9God is faithful; you were called by Him into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. |
I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction. | 10Now I urge you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction. |
My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. | 11For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by members of Chloe's household, that there is rivalry among you. |
What I mean is this: Individuals among you are saying, “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” | 12What I am saying is this: Each of you says, "I'm with Paul," or "I'm with Apollos," or "I'm with Cephas," or "I'm with Christ." |
Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? | 13Is Christ divided? Was it Paul who was crucified for you? Or were you baptized in Paul's name? |
I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, | 14I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, |
so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. | 15so that no one can say you were baptized in my name. |
Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that I do not remember if I baptized anyone else. | 16I did, in fact, baptize the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't know if I baptized anyone else. |
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. | 17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to evangelize--not with clever words, so that the cross of Christ will not be emptied of its effect. |
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. | 18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is God's power to us who are being saved. |
For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” | 19For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the understanding of the experts. |
Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? | 20Where is the philosopher? Where is the scholar? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made the world's wisdom foolish? |
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. | 21For since, in God's wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of the message preached. |
Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom, | 22For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, |
but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, | 23but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. |
but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. | 24Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is God's power and God's wisdom, |
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. | 25because God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength. |
Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth. | 26Brothers, consider your calling: Not many are wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. |
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. | 27Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. |
He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, | 28God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world--what is viewed as nothing--to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, |
so that no one may boast in His presence. | 29so that no one can boast in His presence. |
It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. | 30But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became God-given wisdom for us--our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, |
Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” | 31in order that, as it is written: The one who boasts must boast in the Lord. |
