After his salutation and thanksgiving for the Corinthians,10. Paul exhorts them to unity, 12. and reproves their dissensions. 18. God destroys the wisdom of the wise, 21. by the foolishness of preaching; 26. and calls not the wise, mighty, and noble, 28. but the foolish, weak, and men of no account. Therefore, as it is written: This phrase indicates a conclusion drawn from previous arguments. Paul often uses "as it is written" to reference Old Testament scripture, showing the continuity between the Old and New Testaments. Here, he is likely referring to Jeremiah 9:23-24, emphasizing the importance of relying on God's wisdom rather than human wisdom. This connection underscores the authority of scripture and its role in guiding Christian conduct. Let him who boasts boast in the Lord: Persons / Places / Events 1. Paul the ApostleThe author of the letter to the Corinthians, addressing issues within the church at Corinth and providing guidance on Christian living. 2. Teaching Points Boasting in the LordAs believers, our confidence and pride should be rooted in what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ, not in our own achievements or status. Humility and Dependence Recognize that all good things come from God. Our talents, successes, and spiritual growth are gifts from Him, and we should remain humble and dependent on His grace. Understanding True Wisdom True wisdom and strength come from knowing God and His ways. We should seek to grow in our understanding of Him and His Word. Unity in the Church By boasting in the Lord rather than in human leaders or personal accomplishments, we can promote unity and harmony within the church community. Living a Christ-Centered Life Our lives should reflect the glory of God, and our actions should point others to Him. In all things, let us seek to honor and glorify the Lord.(31) That.--So that it might be as the prophet wrote, "He that boasteth, let him boast in the Lord." This is not a literal quotation, but only an adaptation and paraphrase from the LXX. of Jeremiah 9:23-24. Our only true boasting before God is that we are in Christ, that all we have we owe entirely to Him; we can only glory in, not ourselves or what we have or are, but in the fact that He is our benefactor. Thus, in St. Chrysostom's quaint words, Paul "always fasteneth them on with nails to the name of Christ." This concludes St. Paul's general explanation of God's method, and he then turns to his own conduct, to show how entirely it was in harmony with God's plan, which he has just explained and vindicated. Verse 31. - As it is written. A compressed quotation from the Septuagint Version of Jeremiah 9:23, 24; 1 Samuel 2:10. Let him glory in the Lord. The word rendered "glory" is more literally, boast. The reference is to Jeremiah 9:23, 24; 1 Samuel 2:10 (LXX.). The prevalence of "boasting" among the Corinthians and their teachers drove St. Paul to dwell much on this word - from which he so greatly shrinks - in 2 Corinthians 10:12. (where the word occurs twenty times), and to insist that the only true object in which a Christian can glory is the cross (Galatians 6:14), not in himself, or in the world, or in men. |
