“Indeed, my eyes have seen all this; my ears have heard and understood. | 1"Indeed, my eyes have seen all this, my ears have heard and understood it. |
What you know, I also know; I am not inferior to you. | 2What you know, I know also; I am not inferior to you! |
Yet I desire to speak to the Almighty and argue my case before God. | 3But I wish to speak to the Almighty, and I desire to argue my case with God. |
You, however, smear with lies; you are all worthless physicians. | 4But you, however, are inventors of lies; all of you are worthless physicians! |
If only you would remain silent; for that would be your wisdom! | 5If only you would keep completely silent! For you, that would be wisdom. |
Hear now my argument, and listen to the plea of my lips. | 6"Listen now to my argument, and be attentive to my lips' contentions. |
Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf or speak deceitfully for Him? | 7Will you speak wickedly on God's behalf? Will you speak deceitfully for him? |
Would you show Him partiality or argue in His defense? | 8Will you show him partiality? Will you argue the case for God? |
Would it be well when He examined you? Could you deceive Him like a man? | 9Would it turn out well if he would examine you? Or as one deceives a man would you deceive him? |
Surely He would rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality. | 10He would certainly rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality! |
Would His majesty not terrify you? Would the dread of Him not fall upon you? | 11Would not his splendor terrify you and the fear he inspires fall on you? |
Your maxims are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay. | 12Your maxims are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay. |
Be silent, and I will speak. Then let come to me what may. | 13"Refrain from talking with me so that I may speak; then let come to me what may. |
Why do I put myself at risk and take my life in my own hands? | 14Why do I put myself in peril, and take my life in my hands? |
Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face. | 15Even if he slays me, I will hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face! |
Moreover, this will be my salvation, for no godless man can appear before Him. | 16Moreover, this will become my deliverance, for no godless person would come before him. |
Listen carefully to my words; let my declaration ring in your ears. | 17Listen carefully to my words; let your ears be attentive to my explanation. |
Behold, now that I have prepared my case, I know that I will be vindicated. | 18See now, I have prepared my case; I know that I am right. |
Can anyone indict me? If so, I will be silent and die. | 19Who will contend with me? If anyone can, I will be silent and die. |
Only grant these two things to me, so that I need not hide from You: | 20Only in two things spare me, O God, and then I will not hide from your face: |
Withdraw Your hand from me, and do not let Your terror frighten me. | 21Remove your hand far from me and stop making me afraid with your terror. |
Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak, and You can reply. | 22Then call, and I will answer, or I will speak, and you respond to me. |
How many are my iniquities and sins? Reveal to me my transgression and sin. | 23How many are my iniquities and sins? Show me my transgression and my sin. |
Why do You hide Your face and consider me as Your enemy? | 24Why do you hide your face and regard me as your enemy? |
Would You frighten a windblown leaf? Would You chase after dry chaff? | 25Do you wish to torment a windblown leaf and chase after dry chaff? |
For You record bitter accusations against me and bequeath to me the iniquities of my youth. | 26For you write down bitter things against me and cause me to inherit the sins of my youth. |
You put my feet in the stocks and stand watch over all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet. | 27And you put my feet in the stocks and you watch all my movements; you put marks on the soles of my feet. |
So man wastes away like something rotten, like a moth-eaten garment. | 28So I waste away like something rotten, like a garment eaten by moths. |
