Berean Study BibleNew International Version
Woe to you, O destroyer never destroyed, O traitor never betrayed! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished betraying, you will be betrayed.1Woe to you, destroyer, you who have not been destroyed! Woe to you, betrayer, you who have not been betrayed! When you stop destroying, you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying, you will be betrayed.
O LORD, be gracious to us! We wait for You. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble.2LORD, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.
The peoples flee the thunder of Your voice; the nations scatter when You rise.3At the uproar of your army, the peoples flee; when you rise up, the nations scatter.
Your spoil, O nations, is gathered as by locusts; like a swarm of locusts men sweep over it.4Your plunder, O nations, is harvested as by young locusts; like a swarm of locusts people pounce on it.
The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.5The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with his justice and righteousness.
He will be the sure foundation for your times, a storehouse of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.6He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.
Behold, their valiant ones cry aloud in the streets; the envoys of peace weep bitterly.7Look, their brave men cry aloud in the streets; the envoys of peace weep bitterly.
The highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The treaty has been broken, the witnesses are despised, and human life is disregarded.8The highways are deserted, no travelers are on the roads. The treaty is broken, its witnesses are despised, no one is respected.
The land mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed and decayed. Sharon is like a desert; Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.9The land dries up and wastes away, Lebanon is ashamed and withers; Sharon is like the Arabah, and Bashan and Carmel drop their leaves.
“Now I will arise,” says the LORD. “Now I will lift Myself up. Now I will be exalted.10"Now will I arise," says the LORD. "Now will I be exalted; now will I be lifted up.
You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble. Your breath is a fire that will consume you.11You conceive chaff, you give birth to straw; your breath is a fire that consumes you.
The peoples will be burned to ashes, like thorns cut down and set ablaze.12The peoples will be burned to ashes; like cut thornbushes they will be set ablaze."
You who are far off, hear what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge My might.”13You who are far away, hear what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge my power!
The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling grips the ungodly: “Who of us can dwell with a consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting flames?”14The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"
He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity, who refuses gain from extortion, whose hand never takes a bribe, who stops his ears against murderous plots and shuts his eyes tightly against evil—15Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil--
he will dwell on the heights; the mountain fortress will be his refuge; his food will be provided and his water assured.16they are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. Their bread will be supplied, and water will not fail them.
Your eyes will see the King in His beauty and behold a land that stretches afar.17Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.
Your mind will ponder the former terror: “Where is he who tallies? Where is he who weighs? Where is he who counts the towers?”18In your thoughts you will ponder the former terror: "Where is that chief officer? Where is the one who took the revenue? Where is the officer in charge of the towers?"
You will no longer see the insolent, a people whose speech is unintelligible, who stammer in a language you cannot understand.19You will see those arrogant people no more, people whose speech is obscure, whose language is strange and incomprehensible.
Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts. Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not wander; its tent pegs will not be pulled up, nor will any of its cords be broken.20Look on Zion, the city of our festivals; your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful abode, a tent that will not be moved; its stakes will never be pulled up, nor any of its ropes broken.
But there the Majestic One, our LORD, will be for us a place of rivers and wide canals, where no galley with oars will row, and no majestic vessel will pass.21There the LORD will be our Mighty One. It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams. No galley with oars will ride them, no mighty ship will sail them.
For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our King. It is He who will save us.22For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us.
Your ropes are slack; they cannot secure the mast or spread the sail. Then an abundance of spoils will be divided, and even the lame will carry off plunder.23Your rigging hangs loose: The mast is not held secure, the sail is not spread. Then an abundance of spoils will be divided and even the lame will carry off plunder.
And no resident of Zion will say, “I am sick.” The people who dwell there will be forgiven of iniquity.24No one living in Zion will say, "I am ill"; and the sins of those who dwell there will be forgiven.
