Isaiah 33
1. God's judgments against the enemies of the church
13. The consternation of sinners, and privileges of the godly

He will be the sure foundation for your times
This phrase emphasizes God's role as a stable and reliable foundation amidst the uncertainties of life. In the context of Isaiah, the people of Judah faced threats from Assyrian invasion, and this assurance would have been a source of comfort. The imagery of a "foundation" is reminiscent of Jesus' parable of the wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24-27), where building on the rock symbolizes a life grounded in obedience to God's word. Theologically, this points to God's unchanging nature and His faithfulness throughout history, as seen in Hebrews 13:8, which states that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

a storehouse of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge
This phrase highlights the abundance and sufficiency found in God. The "storehouse" suggests a vast, inexhaustible supply, indicating that God provides everything necessary for spiritual well-being. Salvation here refers to deliverance, not only from physical enemies but also from sin and spiritual death, aligning with the New Testament understanding of salvation through Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). Wisdom and knowledge are often linked in Scripture, as seen in Proverbs 2:6, where the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. This suggests that true wisdom and knowledge are divine gifts, essential for navigating life's challenges.

The fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure
The "fear of the LORD" is a recurring biblical theme, representing reverence, awe, and obedience to God. Proverbs 9:10 states that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, indicating its foundational role in a believer's life. In the context of Zion, which often symbolizes God's people or Jerusalem, this fear is described as a "treasure," suggesting it is of immense value and worth. This aligns with the idea that a proper relationship with God, marked by reverence and obedience, is the most precious possession one can have. Theologically, this points to the covenant relationship between God and His people, where reverence for God leads to blessings and spiritual prosperity.

Teaching Points
God as Our Foundation
In times of uncertainty, God remains the unshakeable foundation. Just as a building relies on a solid base, our lives must be grounded in Him.

The Storehouse of Salvation
Salvation is not just a one-time event but a continual resource. God provides ongoing deliverance and security for those who trust in Him.

Wisdom and Knowledge from God
True wisdom and knowledge come from God. In a world full of information, discernment rooted in God's truth is essential.

The Fear of the LORD as Treasure
Reverence for God is not just a duty but a treasure. It enriches our lives and aligns us with His purposes.

Zion's Example for the Church
Just as Zion was to treasure the fear of the LORD, the church today is called to prioritize reverence and awe for God in its mission and community life.(6) Wisdom and knowledge . . .--The words are used in the higher sense, as in Proverbs 1:1-4, in contrast with the craft and devices of men, just as the "fear of the Lord" is the true treasure, in contrast with the silver and gold in which Hezekiah had been led to place his trust.

Verse 6. - Wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times; literally, and the stability of thy times shall be (i.e. consist in) a rich store of salvations, wisdom, and knowledge. The prophet here addresses the people of Judah in the second person, though in the next clause he reverts to the third. Such transitions are common in ancient compositions, and especially characterize the writings of Isaiah. The fear of the Lord is his treasure; i.e. the wisdom intended is that which is based upon "the fear of the Lord" (Psalm 111:10). This will be at once Judah's "treasure," and a guarantee of stability to her government and institutions (compare the Homiletics on Isaiah 32:15-17).
