A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. | 1A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. |
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. | 2But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. |
For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. | 3For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. |
They have no struggle in their death; their bodies are well-fed. | 4They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. |
They are free of the burdens others carry; they are not afflicted like other men. | 5They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. |
Therefore pride is their necklace; a garment of violence covers them. | 6Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. |
From their prosperity proceeds iniquity; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. | 7From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. |
They mock and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. | 8They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. |
They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongues strut across the earth. | 9Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. |
So their people return to this place and drink up waters in abundance. | 10Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. |
The wicked say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?” | 11They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?" |
Behold, these are the wicked—always carefree as they increase their wealth. | 12This is what the wicked are like-- always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. |
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure; in innocence I have washed my hands. | 13Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. |
For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning. | 14All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments. |
If I had said, “I will speak this way,” then I would have betrayed Your children. | 15If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. |
When I tried to understand all this, it was troublesome in my sight | 16When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply |
until I entered God’s sanctuary; then I discerned their end. | 17till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. |
Surely You set them on slick ground; You cast them down into ruin. | 18Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. |
How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away by terrors! | 19How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! |
Like one waking from a dream, so You, O Lord, awaken and despise their form. | 20They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies. |
When my heart was grieved and I was pierced within, | 21When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, |
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before You. | 22I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. |
Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand. | 23Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. |
You guide me with Your counsel, and later receive me in glory. | 24You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. |
Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You. | 25Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. |
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. | 26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. |
Those far from You will surely perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. | 27Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. |
But as for me, it is good to draw near to God. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may proclaim all Your works. | 28But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. |
