A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. | 1A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! |
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. | 2But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped. |
For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. | 3For I was envious of the arrogant As I saw the prosperity of the wicked. |
They have no struggle in their death; their bodies are well-fed. | 4For there are no pains in their death, And their body is fat. |
They are free of the burdens others carry; they are not afflicted like other men. | 5They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like mankind. |
Therefore pride is their necklace; a garment of violence covers them. | 6Therefore pride is their necklace; The garment of violence covers them. |
From their prosperity proceeds iniquity; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. | 7Their eye bulges from fatness; The imaginations of their heart run riot. |
They mock and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. | 8They mock and wickedly speak of oppression; They speak from on high. |
They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongues strut across the earth. | 9They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue parades through the earth. |
So their people return to this place and drink up waters in abundance. | 10Therefore his people return to this place, And waters of abundance are drunk by them. |
The wicked say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?” | 11They say, "How does God know? And is there knowledge with the Most High?" |
Behold, these are the wicked—always carefree as they increase their wealth. | 12Behold, these are the wicked; And always at ease, they have increased in wealth. |
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure; in innocence I have washed my hands. | 13Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure And washed my hands in innocence; |
For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning. | 14For I have been stricken all day long And chastened every morning. |
If I had said, “I will speak this way,” then I would have betrayed Your children. | 15If I had said, "I will speak thus," Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your children. |
When I tried to understand all this, it was troublesome in my sight | 16When I pondered to understand this, It was troublesome in my sight |
until I entered God’s sanctuary; then I discerned their end. | 17Until I came into the sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their end. |
Surely You set them on slick ground; You cast them down into ruin. | 18Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. |
How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away by terrors! | 19How they are destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors! |
Like one waking from a dream, so You, O Lord, awaken and despise their form. | 20Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when aroused, You will despise their form. |
When my heart was grieved and I was pierced within, | 21When my heart was embittered And I was pierced within, |
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before You. | 22Then I was senseless and ignorant; I was like a beast before You. |
Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand. | 23Nevertheless I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. |
You guide me with Your counsel, and later receive me in glory. | 24With Your counsel You will guide me, And afterward receive me to glory. |
Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You. | 25Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. |
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. | 26My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. |
Those far from You will surely perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. | 27For, behold, those who are far from You will perish; You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You. |
But as for me, it is good to draw near to God. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may proclaim all Your works. | 28But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Your works. |
