| 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside | 9When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. |
| 10and said, “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now!” | 10“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” |
| 11Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. | 11This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. |
| 12After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there a few days. | 12After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. Jesus Clears the Temple |
| 13When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | 13It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. |
| 14In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables. | 14In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. |
| 15So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. | 15Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. |
| 16To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!” | 16Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!” |
| 17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.” | 17Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.” |
| 18On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?” | 18But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.” |
| 19Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” | 19 “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” |
| 20“This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?” | 20“What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?” |
| 21But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body. | 21But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body. |
| 22After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. | 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said. | 23While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the signs He was doing and believed in His name. | 23Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. |
| 24But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all. | 24But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. |
| 25He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man. | 25No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. |
