Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
One Sabbath, when he went in to eat at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, they were watching him closely.1One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully.
There in front of him was a man whose body was swollen with fluid.2And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy.
In response, Jesus asked the law experts and the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"3And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?”
But they kept silent. He took the man, healed him, and sent him away.4But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away.
And to them, he said, "Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?"5And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?”
They could find no answer to these things.6And they could not reply to these things.
He told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they would choose the best places for themselves:7Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them,
"When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't recline at the best place, because a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by your host.8“When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him,
The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give your place to this man,' and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place.9and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place.
"But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests.10But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
He also said to the one who had invited him, "When you give a lunch or a dinner, don't invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.12He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.
On the contrary, when you host a banquet, invite those who are poor, maimed, lame, or blind.13But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,
And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."14and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
When one of those who reclined at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, "Blessed is the one who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"15When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
Then he told him: "A man was giving a large banquet and invited many.16But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many.
At the time of the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, 'Come, because everything is now ready.'17And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
"But without exception they all began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.'18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’
"Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm going to try them out. I ask you to excuse me.'19And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’
"And another said, 'I just got married, and therefore I'm unable to come.'20And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’
"So the servant came back and reported these things to his master. Then in anger, the master of the house told his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in here the poor, maimed, blind, and lame.'21So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’
"'Master,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, and there's still room.'22And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’
"Then the master told the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges and make them come in, so that my house may be filled.23And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.
For I tell you, not one of those people who were invited will enjoy my banquet.'"24For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”
Now great crowds were traveling with him. So he turned and said to them:25Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them,
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, and even his own life--he cannot be my disciple.26“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.27Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
"For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?28For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to ridicule him,29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,
saying, 'This man started to build and wasn't able to finish.'30saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
"Or what king, going to war against another king, will not first sit down and decide if he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand?31Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.32And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.33So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
"Now, salt is good, but if salt should lose its taste, how will it be made salty?34“Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?
It isn't fit for the soil or for the manure pile; they throw it out. Let anyone who has ears to hear listen."35It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
