Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God--1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,
which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures--2which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,
concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh3concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh
and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead.4and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Through him we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the Gentiles,5through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,
including you who are also called by Jesus Christ.6including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
To all who are in Rome, loved by God, called as saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.7To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world.8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.
God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in telling the good news about his Son--that I constantly mention you,9For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you
always asking in my prayers that if it is somehow in God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you.10always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
For I want very much to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,11For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you—
that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.12that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.
Now I don't want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as I have had among the rest of the Gentiles.13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.
I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish.14I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.15So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them.19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse.20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened.21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Claiming to be wise, they became fools22Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Therefore God delivered them over in the desires of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves.24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
For this reason God delivered them over to disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
The men in the same way also left natural relations with women and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error.27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right.28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,
slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
senseless, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful.31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
Although they know God's just sentence--that those who practice such things deserve to die--they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them.32Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
