Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
LORD, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide in times of trouble? | 1 Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? |
In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue their victims; let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. | 2The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. |
For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings; the one who is greedy curses and despises the LORD. | 3For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. |
In all his scheming, the wicked person arrogantly thinks, "There's no accountability, since there's no God." | 4With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." |
His ways are always secure; your lofty judgments have no effect on him; he scoffs at all his adversaries. | 5Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. |
He says to himself, "I will never be moved--from generation to generation without calamity." | 6They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." |
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth; trouble and malice are under his tongue. | 7Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. |
He waits in ambush near settlements; he kills the innocent in secret places. His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless; | 8They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. |
he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket. He lurks in order to seize a victim; he seizes a victim and drags him in his net. | 9Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. |
So he is oppressed and beaten down; helpless people fall because of the wicked one's strength. | 10The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. |
He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he hides his face and will never see." | 11The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." |
Rise up, LORD God! Lift up your hand. Do not forget the oppressed. | 12Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! |
Why has the wicked person despised God? He says to himself, "You will not demand an account." | 13Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? |
But you yourself have seen trouble and grief, observing it in order to take the matter into your hands. The helpless one entrusts himself to you; you are a helper of the fatherless. | 14But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. |
Break the arm of the wicked, evil person, until you look for his wickedness, but it can't be found. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. |
The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. |
LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble; you will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully, | 17LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, |
doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed so that mere humans from the earth may terrify them no more. | 18to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. |
